Dear Epiphany Family,

Our parish has been blessed through the years with wonderful and beloved children and youth directors. Taylor Irwin came to us while she was still a seminarian at Candler to serve as our Director of Children, Youth, and Families. She was in discernment for priesthood and now is nearing ordination to the diaconate this December, and God willing to the priesthood next June. She is also excitedly preparing for her upcoming marriage to the Rev. Hope Anderson, a priest in the Diocese of Upper South Carolina so she will be leaving us at the end of July to prepare for her marriage this fall and a move to South Carolina.

It is the nature of this position that change is inevitable, but always hard. Your Vestry and clergy are in the process of discerning the needs of our children and youth as we look to the future. We are hosting listening sessions, interviews with parents and parishioners, and we hope to have a parish wide session at the end of the summer to share what we have learned. We want to get input from the parish about what you are willing to commit to as we seek to live out the parish priority we set of making the necessary changes to prioritize ministry to children and youth. We also want to think together about what we want that ministry to look like going forward, at a time when recruiting people for those positions is increasingly difficult due to the changing nature of seminary education.

To give us time to discern the path forward, we have asked parishioners Edie Brush to coordinate our children's ministry and Tristen Webb to coordinate our youth ministry through the end of this year. These paid positions will be ten hours per week each. We are excited about their willingness to serve their parish in this way since they are both known to our children and youth as volunteers, which will hopefully make the transition somewhat easier for our students.

Look for more updates to come as our discernment continues. Please reach out to Carmie if you have questions about this while I'm away. And please plan to join us as we celebrate Taylor on her last Sunday with us on July 26.

I look forward to seeing you this Sunday as we celebrate Pentecost together and enjoy our parish picnic and intergenerational field day.

Grace and peace,

Amy

This Sunday

Day of Pentecost

Sunday, May 24

5/24—Sunday, May 24 is the 50th day of Easter, the Day of Pentecost. It commemorates the Holy Spirit’s descent upon the followers of Jesus after his ascension.

Remember to Wear Red!

The use of red at Pentecost is a symbolic representation of the flames of fire that descended on those who were gathered that day, so remember to wear red as a visual representation of the Holy Spirit’s presence and the birth of the Church.

Worship with us at 10:00 a.m.

Livestream Options:

Building Issues

We want you to be aware of some building issues that have arisen this week, especially ahead of our parish picnic this weekend.

Some of you were here the Sunday after Easter when we had issues with overflowing toilets and problems with the sewer line. That backup happened again last Sunday night. (Please remember that nothing but toilet paper should be flushed in the toilets.) We have contacted our insurance provider and a remediation team has been out to begin work on the damage, most of which is concentrated in the office area and hallways.

In addition to all that, our refrigerator is unable to maintain a safe temperature. It is always our preference to repair rather than replace for environmental and financial reasons but it has required several recent repairs and the cost to repair it this time is high enough that it makes more sense to replace it. The new refrigerator will be more energy efficient, use a more environmentally friendly refrigerant, and have a lower environmental impact than our previous one as well. That replacement will happen soon but, in the meantime, know that it is cooling but not cold enough to safely store perishable food.

I'm grateful to say that we are able to make these repairs because your generosity has allowed us to build money into the budget to make capital repairs when they arise. Thank you for the way you care for our building and the way you care for each other.

Grace and peace,

Amy
