The Thinking Woman's Guide to Magic by Emily Croy Barker

Nora is a young graduate student dumped by her boyfriend just when she thought he'd be proposing. Forced to interact with him at the wedding of mutual friends, she heads into a wood at the remote venue, gets lost, and finds herself in a wholly different place, surrounded by beautiful people who find her beautiful, too. Did she travel through time? Turns out she's been welcomed into a Faerie community, and it's not a beautiful place at all, but dark and very dangerous.

For its quality and originality of writing, this character-centered book is highly recommended. Its hint of romantic possibility is an added enticement.

But in 1965 the world is changing, and she suddenly imagines a different choice for her life. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she impulsively joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.
