Pragmatic RCT of a multi-level mechanistically informed community intervention to prevent the onset of behavioral health symptoms among socioeconomically disadvantaged pandemic affected children

Sponsor: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

8/1/2022-5/31/2026

USF Amount: Year 1, $158,075 and estimated total for Y1-4, $634,114.

Racial and ethnic minority children who live in socio-economically disadvantaged communities are disproportionately impacted by pandemic and climate-induced disasters. Although effective interventions have been designed to treat mental health related symptoms in post-disaster settings, accessible, empirically supported prevention interventions are needed to prevent the onset of mental and behavioral health issues among these children. To address this need, a multi-site NIMH pragmatic randomized clinical trial [R01MH131248] with sites in Florida (400 children) and Texas (400 children) will examine the implementation and efficacy of the COVID-19 adaptation of a widely disseminated disaster focused empirically supported prevention intervention, the Journey of Hope (JoH), distributed by Save the Children, a humanitarian organization serving socio-economically disadvantaged and racial and ethnic minority children and families; and delivered through community-based organizations and schools in post-disaster contexts.

Alison Salloum, PhD, USF School of Social Work, will lead the Florida site with Dr. Stephanie Marhefka, USF College of Nursing, studying implementation barriers and facilitators. This multi-site study includes researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Social Work (PI, Powell T.), University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work (Co-I, Berger-Cardoso J.) and Baylor University College of Medicine (Co-I, Storch E.A).
