Prevention Coalition Launches 988 Coaster Campaign Across Ashtabula County

Ashtabula County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board's Prevention Coalition is expanding awareness of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline through a unique community outreach campaign. Beginning in June and continuing throughout July, committee members are delivering custom 988 coasters to local taverns and other establishments that serve alcoholic beverages across Ashtabula County.

The idea for the campaign was inspired by a similar initiative in Lorain County. Recognizing the opportunity to reach individuals in places they may not typically encounter mental health resources, the committee adapted the concept to help spread awareness of the free, confidential 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

The campaign is designed to broaden community awareness of 988 while also serving as a meaningful reminder that no one has to face life's challenges alone. Alcohol can intensify feelings of depression, anxiety, or hopelessness for some individuals. By placing the coasters directly in local establishments, the coalition hopes that someone who may be struggling—or someone who notices a friend in distress—will see the message and know that help is available.

The coasters emphasize that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline connects callers and texters with compassionate, trained crisis counselors who provide confidential support without judgment, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Prevention Coalition extends its appreciation to the owners and staff of participating establishments who have partnered in this effort by providing the coasters to patrons. Together, these businesses are helping spread an important message throughout the community: you are never alone, and help is only three numbers away.

The coasters campaign was made possible by grant G28RH46290 from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an operating division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of HRSA or the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Ohio's Mental Health and Addiction Conference

The Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities (OACBHA) held their annual Mental Health and Addiction Conference on June 1–2 in Columbus, Ohio. Bridget Sherman from Ashtabula County Mental Health & Recovery Services (MHRS) Board, co-presented a session on Recovery Friendly Workplace with colleagues from the Communities of Practice for the Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (COP-RCORP). The presentation highlighted strategies for creating recovery-supportive workplaces and demonstrated the value of regional collaboration to improve outcomes for individuals in recovery.

Ashtabula County MHRS Board continues to prioritize representation at state and national conferences to share the innovative work being done locally and highlight the accomplishments of our community partners. These opportunities allow Ashtabula County to showcase successful initiatives, build partnerships, and bring valuable resources and ideas back to our community.

TRAININGS

SUD COE: Reinforcing Recovery: A Practical Introduction to Contingency Management

Tuesday July 21st

9:00am to 10:30am

Contingency Management (CM) is a well-established, evidence-based intervention for treating a range of substance use disorders, supported by decades of rigorous research. It is the most effective behavioral treatment available for stimulant use disorders—a growing clinical and public health concern in the United States (HHS, 2023). In Ohio, this concern is particularly urgent, with 66.1% of overdose deaths in 2024 involving at least one stimulant (CDC SUDORS, 2024). Despite its strong empirical support, CM remains significantly underutilized due to common misconceptions, implementation challenges, and systems-level barriers.

SUD COE: Treatment of Women with Substance Use Disorders: Addressing Opioid Use Disorders during the Perinatal Period

Thursday July 23rd

12:00pm to 1:00pm

The perinatal period is a critical and often high-risk window for women experiencing substance use disorders (SUD), particularly opioid use disorder (OUD). Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are well-established, evidence-based interventions that significantly reduce opioid use, prevent overdose, and support long-term recovery; however, many women in the perinatal period who could benefit from MOUD do not receive it. Historical prescribing restrictions and persistent stigma have contributed to misconceptions that MOUD is difficult to initiate or manage, resulting in limited provider training and reduced access to care. Recent regulatory changes have eased prescribing barriers, creating an urgent opportunity for behavioral health and allied health professionals to expand competency, confidence, and collaboration in treating perinatal OUD.
