HELD EVERY 2ND & 4TH WEDNESDAY

Lynn Arave will join us to share his new book, Legends, Lore, and True Tales of Utah, an entertaining and obscure history of the state.
Ordinary history books often fail to address the obscure or the unexplained, leaving questions buried in annals of yesteryear. Where were Utah’s mythical monsters, including Bigfoot, spotted? How did “Schoolmarm’s Bloomers” become a state symbol? Why did “Frankenstein” prowl through the Cache town of Clarkston? Exactly what was the “Lakemobile” that rolled through the Great Salt Lake? Lynn Arave presents this unique collection, including more than one hundred photographs, of the Beehive State’s offbeat history.
Lynn Arave is a retired journalist. He worked for the Deseret News for thirty-two years, first as a sportswriter, then as a feature writer and finally as a city desk reporter and editor. He is the author of the books Walking Salt Lake City, Layton (Images of America series), and Detour Utah: Mysteries, Legends and Peculiar Places, as well as the Mystery of Utah History blog. Lynn lives in Layton with his wife, LeAnn Flygare Arave.

Weller Book Works Collectors' Book Salons feature libations and treats, social time for conversation and a special deal on rare books that is only available to guests. Books are bridges across the divides of time and space and like they embrace the diversity of the human experience, we try to keep our treats, speakers and deals diverse which is maybe another word for unpredictable.

A message from Tony Weller:

After 29 months' hiatus we will resume the monthly gathering with a group sharing event, and I am asking you to attend with a book you esteem that was not authored by a Caucasian male. White guys have held stage for too long and our civil progress will be better served if we balance our perception. This is a gathering for book fetishists. What makes your volume special? Please choose a book and come prepared to share your choice with other guests.

I believe in the power of environment and consider costume a piece of it. In that spirit I use our salons to play with attire and encourage guests to dress up, or down, or weird, or playfully, to help our sensibilities out of predictable zones.

Glasses filled at 6:30 and we muster for the Collectors’ Chat at 7:15 in our Rare Book Room. The event has no digital component.
In addition to our recurring suite of events, here are a few events in August to look forward to. More details to come!
