Restoring Hope: Habitat's Home Repair Program Enhances Accessibility

When Cynthia and Charles moved into their home in 1996, they envisioned it as the foundation where their family would thrive. Now, many years later, Charles, a Marine veteran and grandfather, faces mobility challenges as he undergoes dialysis for kidney failure. With limited mobility, he struggles to move around the house and complete daily tasks.

The Habitat Forsyth Home Repair Program stepped in to help by making their home more accessible. The team repaired windows to improve airflow and remodeled the bathroom, installing a walk-in shower and a chair for Charles to use while bathing.

“It’s been a blessing,” Cynthia said. “The cost we had to put down was a blessing because we couldn’t have done it any other way.”

Throughout Charles' health challenges, Cynthia has remained positive, though she notes that Charles rarely admits when he’s in pain. “He never complains… he’s an easygoing man. He said he doesn’t like getting old, but I said, ‘What’s the other choice?’” Cynthia laughed.

Cynthia spoke gratefully about the help they received from Habitat. Jacquie and Omar, who led the project, were attentive to the family’s needs and clear about how they could help.

“It’s been wonderful working with Habitat because they treat you like real people,” Cynthia said. “They didn’t make us feel small or needy. They just saw our concerns and said, ‘Here’s what we can do, and here’s how long it will take.’”

After years of waiting for help from the Department of Veteran Affairs, Cynthia and Charles were relieved by Habitat’s straightforward process. Within a month of being approved, the project was underway.

“It was just easy,” Cynthia said. Learn more about Habitat Forsyth's Home Repair Program.

YEP! Possibilities Tour: A Journey of Learning, Service and Fun

Last month, teens in Habitat Forsyth’s Youth Empowerment Program (YEP!) embarked on an unforgettable Possibilities Tour to Atlanta, Georgia. This trip offered a transformative mix of history, career exploration, community service, and exciting local experiences.

The tour kicked off with a walking tour of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic landmarks, where students delved into untold stories of the Civil Rights Movement, gaining new perspectives on social justice. This was followed by a visit to the Savannah College of Art and Design, where they explored creative career paths and expanded their understanding of future opportunities.

A stop at the World of Coke allowed students to learn about the global impact of an iconic brand, blending fun with education. They also gave back to the community by participating in a service project at a food kitchen in downtown Atlanta, instilling a sense of social responsibility and service.

Alongside these educational and service activities, the students savored the local culture. From trying new foods to enjoying a fine dining experience, they got a taste of Atlanta’s culinary delights. The trip concluded with the thrill of a Braves baseball game, adding a fun and memorable cap to their adventure.

The YEP! Possibilities Tour was a perfect combination of education, service, and fun, leaving each participant with lasting memories and a deeper understanding of their potential.
