Plein Air Painting Event Planned at Seelye Mansion | | |
The Arts Council of Dickinson County and the Historic Seelye Mansion invite the public to enjoy an afternoon of creativity during Painting on the Patio, a plein air painting experience set in the beautiful gardens of the Seelye Mansion.
The event will take place Saturday, April 25, beginning with light refreshments and an opportunity to meet the artists and instructors at 3:30 p.m. Painting instruction will begin at 4:00 p.m., where participants will be guided step by step in creating a landscape inspired by the Seelye Mansion’s scenic patio and pond. The setting features the charming footbridge, waterfall, willow tree, and other garden details that make the mansion grounds a favorite Abilene landmark.
Plein air painting, from the French term meaning “open air,” is the practice of painting outdoors on site to capture natural light, atmosphere, and color.
Reservations are required by April 18. The cost is $40 per person, which includes light refreshments and all painting supplies.
To reserve a spot, contact the Seelye Mansion at 785-263-1084.

A Perfect Day in Abilene: Antique Finds, Downtown Charm, and a Car Show, Too!
| | Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 9, 2026, and plan a spring getaway to Abilene. The 8th Annual Abilene Downtown Antique Fest is back, and it is the kind of event that turns a simple Saturday into a full day of discovery, shopping, and small-town fun. Even better, it is all happening on Mother’s Day weekend, making it the perfect excuse to grab your favorite people and head to Abilene! | | Kansas's Best Small Town for Retirement | |
Kansas, known for its cost-effective lifestyle and diverse landscape, is increasingly becoming an attractive option for retirees. Kansas is far more geographically varied than many people realize, from the gentle Smoky Hills to the sweeping tallgrass prairie and the striking Flint Hills. A cultural patchwork has been woven together by its Native American heritage, its place in America’s westward expansion, and its robust agricultural development.
The question then becomes where to settle. The answer is Abilene. The small town of Abilene is a prize in the very heart of the Midwest. The Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home gives the town one of Kansas’s most substantial historic attractions, with exhibits on World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidency, and his early life. Old Abilene Town adds another fun draw with Old West reenactments, saloons, and vintage boutiques that give the community a stronger sense of place than a typical small town. Consider its welcoming spirit and affordability, with house prices hovering around $180,000. Join this informative tour of a standout Midwestern town that excels in senior living.

Did you know Abilene is home to one of the most unique museums in the country? The Greyhound Hall of Fame celebrates the history, heart, and athleticism of this incredible breed.
It’s a one-of-a-kind stop you won’t find anywhere else.
