New Design for Orange Shirt Day 2024

"The Journey"

Dear Friends of Indigena,

We are pleased to announce that Gallery Indigena now has available the new 2024 T-shirt design of "Every Child Matters" to commemorate the impact of Residential Schools.

In purchasing an orange shirt, you are contributing to reconciliation efforts with proceeds from shirt sales funding initiatives that support Indigenous wellness, learning, and culture. Wearing an orange shirt helps to build awareness about the impact of Residential Institutions on past and current Indigenous peoples.

Coast Salish artist Simone Diamond returns this year as the designer for the 2024 Orange Shirt, called "The Journey." The design features a grown bear holding two cubs in their arms, surrounding and protecting the next generation with the words "Every Child Matters" below the image.

New Artist! Mazy Way Indigenous Designs

We are pleased to be carrying a new artist at Gallery Indigena. Métis beading artist Kathy Moore creates beautiful, hand-beaded jewellery, including orange shirt and orange dress lapel pins. Kathy created these pins in collaboration with survivors of Residential schools, with proceeds going back to help build the Mohawk Village Memorial Park.

We will be selling her beaded orange shirt pin for $20 ea. and her orange dress for $25 ea. Stock is limited, so act fast!

For those looking to learn more about the origins of Orange Shirt Day, we recommend reading Beyond the Orange Shirt Story by Phyllis Webstad. This book is a unique collection of truths, as told by six generations of Phyllis Webstad's family that will give readers an up-close look at what life was like before, during, and after their Residential School experiences.

Beyond the Orange Shirt Story by Phyllis Webstad, $19.95.

Lofttan Medicine Wheel Collection

Support the Building of the Mohawk Village Memorial Park

We are also pleased to be selling Lofttan, another beautiful hand-made jewellery line at Gallery Indigena.

Lofttan will be giving a portion of the proceeds from the Medicine Wheel Collection to the Mohawk Village Memorial Park, a place of healing for survivors, their families, and community of the Residential “school” atrocities, in perpetuity, until enough money has been raised to complete the park.

The Mohawk Village Memorial Park began when a group of former students of the Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School began meeting informally to discuss their experiences. Realizing they needed a more meaningful way to address the loss of childhood caused by the residential school experience, this group of survivors believed a memorial park would be an appropriate way to honour the children that attended Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School. As with Mazy Way, stock is limited, so make sure you're in contact with us to reserve your jewellery choices.
