Eight live one-hour webinars will be held on Tuesday and Thursdays afternoons from October 15-24. All those registered will be able to view (or review) recordings of all the presentations at their leisure for a full month.

Please join us for our meeting when the Orcas Island Garden Club welcomes Craig Cogger to speak about soils and fertilizer use, including organic fertilizers, soil tests and interpretations, published guidance, and calculating fertilizer rates. Craig will present to us via Zoom but we welcome you to join us to view the presentation at the library.
Craig Cogger was a Soil Scientist at WSU Puyallup from 1984 until his retirement in 2015. He conducted and published research on organic farming systems and organic nutrient management, taught soils classes for Master Gardeners, and wrote WSU gardening publications. He now volunteers as a gardening educator with students and adults in Tacoma.

The League of Women Voters of the San Juans, a non-partisan, non-profit organization, is
sponsoring voter forums for county residents to get to know the County Council candidates on the ballot for the November election.
The voter forums are moderated events during which candidates will present introductory statements and respond to questions, within time limits. All four County Council candidates have confirmed that they will attend. The League of Women Voters requires civil discourse in forums, and all questions to candidates must meet that requirement.
The meeting will be livestreamed by CNL2 (San Juan Today) at https://cnl2.com/. Community members who wish to ask questions of candidates but cannot attend in person may email their questions in advance of the forums to the League at pres.lwvsji@gmail.com. Please keep questions as succinct as possible AND note that questions may be combined or edited.

Dave appropriately titled his exhibit The Land, since he has been photographing the grand landscapes and small details of the natural environment for many years. Although he also photographs in color and loves experimenting with various techniques, Dave leans more towards black and white imagery than any other form. Dave’s exhibit features images from Washington, Iceland, Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Parks.
Dave grew up in Buffalo, NY; he and his wife have been Orcas residents for 25 years.

The Orcas Island Public Library seeks to include exhibits of visual arts in its mission to support all learners.
Art will be shown for a month, to be scheduled by the Library Art Committee. To be considered for 2025, please email imattson@orcaslibrary.org 6 digital images of your work, a brief (200 word) statement of interest, and an artist's bio.
Deadline: November 1, 2024. The Library Art Committee will review submissions and may not accept or schedule all artists.

GALLERY CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENT FROM LAUGHING CAT DESIGNS STUDIO | |

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Gallery side of Laughing Cat Designs will be closing after Christmas. For the 20+ artists displaying their work there, it is a bright spot in Eastsound that will be sorely missed.
Gail’s studio side will remain open where her art will continue to be available. This winter, the studio will hold art classes and demonstrations by local artists.
The shop will be closed the weeks of September 24-29 and October 4-14. New fall hours are 10am to 4pm.

ANNUAL 'LIVE YOUR DREAM' EDUCATION GRANT | |

Soroptimists International of Friday Harbor is offering their annual award of $4,000 for a woman who is the primary support for her family, who is enrolled in a vocational training or other educational program, and who has financial need. This award can be used for any expenses incurred while receiving her education.

Chair Yoga: Enhancing Balance and Wellbeing for Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities
Join us for Chair Yoga, a soothing practice tailored for seniors and those with disabilities, held every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 10:45 am. This gentle technique incorporates the use of a chair for support, enabling participants to explore balance poses without the concern of falling.

Ukulele Kanikipila: Join the Musical Fun at Orcas Senior Center!
Experience the joy of making music at Ukulele Kanikipila, Hawaiian for "play music," every Monday from 1 to 3 pm at Orcas Senior Center. This gathering is open to everyone with an interest in playing music for two hours each week.
If you're a player looking to dive into the world of ukulele playing, join Kathy Collister's twice weekly for ukulele class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 to 1 pm. If you are a true beginner Kathy has an 11am class on Thursdays that will get you up to speed in no time!
Kathy, an experienced instructor, will guide you through the basics of introductory chords and strumming techniques. The class is free of charge, but make sure to bring your own ukulele. Orcas Island Physical Therapy
Position: Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant
Description: We are the only outpatient PT clinic on the island. As such, we see a good variety of patients, mostly orthopedic with some neuro as well. We serve a very active population here, with patients ranging in age from 6 -103. This is a full-time on-site role. The Physical Therapist Assistant will work closely with the physical therapists to provide therapy treatments, exercises, and interventions to patients. The PTA will evaluate and document patient progress and provide education to patients and their families/caregivers.
Qualifications:
- Current Washington Physical Therapist Assistant license
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Skilled in collaborative teamwork
Pay & Benefits: This is a full-time position starting at $30/hr DOE and includes benefit package.
