Produce of the Week:

Figs

The highly anticipated Mississippi-grown figs are in at the Mississippi Farmers Market! To honor the arrival of this sweet, mildly-flavored fruit, we are sharing a few fascinating fig facts:

Figs are in the mulberry family and grow on a Ficus tree in dry and sunny areas with deep and fresh soil and also in rocky areas, from sea level to an elevation of 5,500 feet.
They are native to West Asia.
Many primates, bats, and birds eat figs.
You only need one plant to produce an abundance of fruit.
There are three types of edible figs: common fig, Smyrna figs, and San Pedro.
One large fig contains about 47 calories.

Honey-Fried Figs: An Easy, 15-Minute Dish

Use your figs creatively with this delicious fried fig with honey and butter recipe!

Total: 15 mins

Prep: 5 mins

Cook: 10 mins

Yield: 4 to 6 servings

What You'll Need:

-12 figs*

-2 tablespoons butter*

-2 tablespoons honey*

- Optional: 2 tablespoons tawny port or a sweet, fortified wine

- Optional: Ice cream, yogurt, or whipped cream

Instructions:

(1) Rinse figs and pat dry. Trim off and discard excess stem and cut figs in half lengthwise. Set them aside.

(2) In medium frying pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add honey and gently stir into butter.

(3) When mixture is fully combined, set figs cut-side-down in honey-butter mixture and cook. Shake pan regularly to keep figs from sticking; spoon the honey-butter mixture over tops of the figs until everything is bubbling and figs are starting to brown, about 5 minutes.

(4) If using port, remove figs from pan, and whisk in port (or whatever you're using).

(5) Once wine is whisked in and a smooth sauce forms, let simmer and bubble for a few minutes to thicken.

(6) Add figs back in pan, spoon sauce over figs to heat everything together.

(7) Serve figs hot or warm, along with ice cream or topped with a dollop of yogurt or whipped cream, if you desire.
