May Retirement Briefing

Sherman Family Updates

Hello friends!

As we welcome the warmth and energy of June, I wanted to take a moment to share some personal highlights from my family’s May and to remind you of the values that guide our work together at Sherman Private Wealth Management.

This past month was filled with milestones and cherished moments. My boys, Jack and Jett, have both been growing and thriving in their own special ways. We recently attended their school’s open house and ice cream social, an event that always fills me with pride. Walking through their classrooms and seeing the projects and artwork they’ve poured their hearts into was a wonderful reminder of how much growth happens in just one school year. With their last day on June 11th, we’re looking forward to celebrating all they’ve accomplished before summer officially begins.

On the field, Jack had a remarkable month in football—I had the pleasure of coaching his team, and together we celebrated two wins and one loss. Jack truly stepped up this season, making some impressive throws as quarterback and pulling off a few memorable catches as receiver. It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch him develop not only his athletic skills but also his sense of teamwork and perseverance.

Off the field, Jack has continued with his passion: golf. He’s been attending a weekly Wednesday golf camp and recently completed his first tournament as part of the Operation 36 program. It’s exciting to see him take on new challenges and enjoy the journey of learning a new sport.

Meanwhile, Jett continues to find joy in his weekly art class in downtown Rochester. His creativity never ceases to amaze me—last week, he crafted a beautiful bouquet of flowers from melted plastic Dixie cups! Seeing his enthusiasm for art and the pride he takes in his creations is a constant source of inspiration.

And, of course, we can’t forget about Teddy, our Mini Aussie Labradoodle, who celebrated his first birthday on May 31st. The breeder hosted a special reunion for Teddy and all his siblings, which was a heartwarming way to mark the occasion and watch them play together again.

On a personal note, Lindsay and I have been able to sneak in multiple rounds of golf this May, enjoying the early signs of summer together. Now that the weather has truly turned for the better, we’ve also started playing pickleball outdoors. It’s been a blast, and I’m loving every minute—even if it means I’ll be sporting some rather noticeable sunglasses tan lines! Consider yourself warned if you see me in person soon.

Connecting the Dots

Just as each of these moments—whether it’s a school project, a football game, an art class, or a puppy party—reinforces the importance of nurturing growth, celebrating achievements, and building meaningful relationships, these values also guide our approach at Sherman Private Wealth Management. We understand that your financial journey is unique, and we’re committed to providing you with a comprehensive, tax-smart, and personalized financial plan that gives you clarity, confidence, and actionable steps toward your goals. May Market Update

May 2025 Market Review: Optimism and Opportunity for Retirees

As we turn the page on May 2025, I want to share key market insights and strategic guidance tailored for those nearing or enjoying retirement. At Sherman Private Wealth Management, we remain committed to delivering tax-smart, personalized financial planning—helping you navigate both opportunities and uncertainties with clarity and confidence.

Market Highlights: Strong Gains and Renewed Optimism

May was a standout month for U.S. equities, with the S&P 500 rising 6.15%, the Dow Jones up 3.94%, and the Nasdaq surging 9.56%—the best monthly performance for major indices since late 20231. This broad-based rally was fueled by the de-escalation of U.S.–China tariffs, positive corporate earnings, and improved consumer sentiment. Large-cap technology stocks led the charge, but gains also extended to sectors such as industrials and consumer discretionary, signaling a healthy and diversified market advance.

Corporate earnings growth remained robust, with S&P 500 companies reporting a 12.5% year-over-year increase in Q1, and an impressive 77% of companies beating earnings expectations6. This resilience, even amid global trade uncertainties and shifting economic headlines, underscores the adaptability and strength of today’s leading businesses.

Economic Backdrop: Stability Amid Change

While the market’s momentum is encouraging, it’s important to acknowledge the mixed economic signals. Inflation remains elevated, and the Federal Reserve has indicated it will maintain current interest rates through year-end to address fiscal deficits and price pressures2. The labor market shows some signs of cooling, but unemployment remains stable at 4.2%1.

For retirees and pre-retirees, these dynamics reinforce the value of a well-diversified, income-focused investment strategy—one that balances growth potential with capital preservation and reliable cash flow.

What This Means for Your Retirement Plan

1. Diversification and Income Remain Key

As you approach or enjoy retirement, your portfolio should naturally shift toward a blend of growth and safety. Bonds, especially U.S. Treasuries, high-quality corporates, and municipal bonds, can offer income and can help buffer against equity volatility. Bond laddering strategies can further reduce interest rate risk and provide predictable cash flow.

Retirement income funds and dividend growth funds are also valuable tools, offering a balance between steady payouts and modest growth. These vehicles are designed to help you meet your income needs without sacrificing long-term financial security.

2. Tax-Smart Planning is More Important Than Ever

With significant tax law changes on the horizon at the end of 2025, now is the time to review your withdrawal strategies, Roth conversions, and account location. Managing required minimum distributions (RMDs), optimizing tax-advantaged accounts, and considering charitable giving from IRAs can all help minimize your tax burden and maximize your retirement income.

3. Stay the Course—With Confidence

Despite headline volatility and global uncertainties, the fundamental drivers of market growth remain intact: resilient corporate profits, ongoing innovation, and a healthy consumer sector. At Sherman Private Wealth Management, our disciplined, tax-smart approach is designed to help you weather short-term fluctuations while keeping your long-term goals in focus.

Looking Ahead: Opportunity Through Proactive Planning

The market’s strong performance in May is a reminder that optimism and discipline go hand in hand. As we move through 2025, we will continue to monitor economic developments, tax law changes, and market trends, adjusting your plan as needed to ensure you remain on track for a confident and fulfilling retirement.

If you have questions about your portfolio, tax strategies, or how current events may impact your financial future, please reach out. Together, we can turn uncertainty into opportunity and ensure your retirement plan remains as dynamic as your life.

Wishing you a prosperous summer with fewer taxes.
