"FROM ONE GREAT SHIP TO ANOTHER..."

As our beloved ship is being prepared for a new role, we encourage supporters of the SS United States to join us in commemorating this unique moment in her history. While a firm date has not yet been set for the SS United States' deployment as an artificial reef, we will share news and updates as this timing advances, along with guidance on how you can witness the event in person and online.

In the meantime, we would love to hear from you -- send us a postcard addressed directly to the Big U sharing your connection to the ship, how she inspired you, or anything else you’d wish to share. These will become a permanent part of the Conservancy's curatorial collection.

Dale in North Dakota answered our call with a postcard featuring the Cunard Line's Queen Elizabeth 2. His message reads, “From one great ship to another…Bon Voyage.”

Others from around the country have shared their moving messages to commemorate the SS United States. A note from one supporter reads, “I saw the arrival through the Narrows July 1952…spent hours at night as a 15 year old talking with Mr. Drews, an engineer/designer with Gibbs and Cox.”

We are so grateful to those who have shared their messages to the SS United States so far, and would love to hear from you! For details about how to share your own farewell, or to read additional letters that we have received, click here.

SHARE IN OUR EXHIBITION ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION!

The Conservancy’s most recent digital exhibition is approaching its one year anniversary! Since last year, thousands of visitors have explored “Food Tastes Better at Sea: Food and Dining Aboard the SS United States.”

For many former passengers, memories of the food and dining experience onboard remain vivid even decades later. Recently, a visitor to our “Food Tastes Better at Sea” exhibition shared: “My family sailed on the SS United States in November 1965. I was 12 at the time, my youngest sister was 8. I remember she just wanted a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. When they brought her sandwich, it was elaborately plated, cut in triangles, crust trimmed. When she saw it, she burst into tears. When my mother asked what was wrong, she said she just wanted a peanut butter foldover!”

We are so grateful to the many supporters who shared their reflections on this digital exhibition and their own memories of dining on the Big U. A SHRINE FOR THE SS UNITED STATES

Conservancy supporter Allen recently shared a photo of his collection of Big U memorabilia, featuring two miniature models and a dedicated recreation of one of the ship's iconic funnels!

Also included in his display is a cap from the SS United States, and Picture History of the SS United States by William H. Miller. Thank you, Allen, for sharing your love of the Big U!
