Digging In to Feed Families

Recently, 12 Atlantic Housing Foundation employees ventured away from the corporate office to spend a few hours digging in the dirt. The community garden at the West Dallas Multipurpose Center grows fruits, vegetables, and herbs that will be harvested for a bi-monthly distribution of fresh, local foods to neighbors in need, and it was time for spring planting.

The Center's Director, Ashley Hutto, hosted this project along with Rabekha Siebert, Environmental Coordinator III for the City of Dallas, and volunteers with the Last Patrol also joined in. Together the group helped plant about 340 seedlings, several fruit trees, and also put up a shade structure to protect the garden from the summer heat. Digging in the dirt was a great change from the usual workday, and everyone had a great time serving together.

Rabekha said that the focus on "sustainable food production and resilient food systems are under the umbrella of our comprehensive urban agriculture plan, which is a 5 to 10 year framework with the primary directive of increasing production on Dallas soil." There are multiple growing sites like this in the area as well as at HUD sites and food banks. Atlantic Housing Community Connections

Many Atlantic Housing apartment communities hosted Easter events this spring. Quail Ridge residents enjoyed food and an outdoor egg hunt - just before the rain. Silver Leaf Villas provided an ice cream truck with their festivities. The Easter Bunny showed up at Waters at Elm Creek, and Stone Creek's celebration included food, Easter baskets, and local sponsors from First Convenience Bank and Play on Wheels.

At Westfield student housing, residents enjoyed International Waffle Day, National Plant a Flower Day, and Global Recycling Day events.
