Hey there 👋🏽

It’s a sunny Saturday afternoon here in Austin. ☀️

First, THANK YOU for being part of the TIDE Tribe. If you’re receiving this email, it’s because you’re one of the 10K cool ones in the investment industry who is subscribed to TIDE’s newsletter. This email is particularly from me personally.

I want to touch base because sometimes we get lost in the daily grind that we lose sight of truly important things.

So let me take it back to January 2020, when TIDE was first launched. From the onset, TIDE became a partner to the largest US public pension plans in their emerging manager and diversity and inclusion efforts. Our vision was – and still is – to break down silos. So clichĂŠ, right? What does that really mean?

It means that when I was representing the interest of Asian Americans in the investment industry, I didn’t feel that it was right for me to fight against my fellow Latinas and Latinos, against my Black brothers and sisters, against other underrepresented groups. Fighting for what? The 2% of capital allocation to underrepresented minorities?! No, I didn’t make it out from South Side Stockton to fight for crumbs. I'm in it for all to get a bigger piece of the pie. The cool thing about it is this: we can grow the pie even bigger.

While I think each ethnic group needs its own voice because they face different challenges, there needs to be a united voice for diversity. Hence, the genesis of The Investment Diversity Exchange.

Diversity isn’t a zero-sum game. A zero-sum mentality refers to inherently seeing gains made by one group as a loss for another group. This belief can be especially prevalent when people talk about diversity. A recent study by Brown and Jacoby-Senghor spoke about this topic and found that even in situations when it was explicitly discussed how both minority and majority individuals could benefit people automatically had a zero-sum mentality whenever an initiative was framed as “diversity”[1].

So this summer, I have one special invitation for you. I invite you to partake in DEI, one of the most important movements in our industry, by attending TIDE’s highly anticipated marquee event at Dana Point, California: TIDE SPARK.

We’re featuring the biggest names in the industry including CEO of CalPERS Marcie Frost, CA & CT State Treasurers, and high profile CIO’s.

Can’t attend? You can still be part of the movement – amplify our mission and share TIDE SPARK with your fave LP’s and GP’s. Post on LinkedIN and tag TIDE. Make a greater effort to allocate to highly qualified diverse managers – same goes for your hiring practices. There are many ways to be an advocate for change.

At the end of the day, change starts with you. 😉

That’s all I have for you today. Short and sweet.

I hope you enjoy your Saturday!

Cheers 🥂

Grace
