An Iowa Civil Rights Exhibit in Washington High School

Each week during the month of February, we will highlight an activity from our schools to celebrate Black History Month.

This month, students in Jordan Young's classroom have taken in a special Iowa civil rights exhibit, on loan from the African American Museum of Iowa. The exhibit explores the struggles and triumphs of Iowans fighting for their civil rights.

Young, a social studies teacher at Washington High School, sees the impact the panels have on students' educational experience.

"In my African-American History classes, it has allowed myself and my students to explore history that they may not be aware of and connect that to what we are learning in class," he explains.

Three CRCSD Students Qualify for NSDA National Tournament

Olivia Yee, a senior at Kennedy High School, has qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) National Tournament for the fourth straight year.

Yee competes in informative speaking, where students prepare and deliver an informational speech using visual aids. Her speech this year covered the topic of blue foods—such as seafood—as the future of protein. She will prepare a new speech for the national tournament.

Joining Yee at the national tournament will be two Washington High School students, Claudia Gay and Jessica Cline. They qualified in policy debate, where the topic this year is protection of water resources by the U.S. federal government.
