Meet LSP facilitator Richard Gold and: - A 'principled' approach to remote LSP - A new research paper on the impact of LSO in team development
"Richard is a Certified Facilitator in the LEGO Serious Play method and materials since 2014 and has run workshops using LSP and other playful and not so playful methods for organisations of many kinds in the private, public and third sectors.
He is also an experienced manager and consultant with and MBA from INSEAD and more than 25 years' blue chip experience leading projects and facilitating workshops across a range of disciplines including strategy, innovation, customer experience, corporate branding and digital transformation.
In a world that is that is changing at an accelerating pace, he passionately believes that systemic thinking and purposeful play can help organisations and teams to solve some of their biggest issues; and he has founded Bulbb (www.bulbb.co.uk) to do so. He is also a co-founder of Vision4Health (www.vision4health.org), a not for profit with a mission to drive longer term thinking into healthcare. A 'principled' approach to remote LSP
"Having been using LSP extensively since my certification training with Robert in 2014, the complete collapse of in-person gatherings in March this year was, like for all us, something of a difficulty."Like everyone, I looked at whether to try to take the offer online. I concluded that, although I could - and have - in some limited ways use LEGO® in remote meetings (with a better experience than similar tasks performed using other methods). But the power of the LSP method that I had been taught and practiced was the combination of lots of methods that worked with people in the same room. "It led me to wonder whether I could deconstruct the method to its underlying principles and then reimagine them for remote meetings and workshops - using the best methods for the job - to help people think about how to design and deliver the kind of productive, inventive meetings in the new physically distanced world. "The result was this article: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/deconstructing-underpinning-principles-lego-serious-play-richard-gold and a nascent training offer on Playful Principles for Productive, Inventive Meetings. Do get in touch if you'd like to find out more."
A new research paper on the impact of LSP in team development
At last year's global gathering of AMT-certified LSP facilitators in Billund, Richard previewed some academic research he was working on with Henley Business School in the UK into the impact of an Real Time Strategy for the Team LSP intervention on team cohesion and psychological safety. The first part of that research, describing the qualitative results, has just been published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Work Applied Management - "All To Play For: LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® and its impact on team cohesion, collaboration and psychological safety in organisational settings". The paper provides strong evidence for the power of the LSP RTS methodology in team development. Among the paper's findings is that LSP can play a positive role in developing psychological safety, team cohesion and collaboration in teams; and, crucially, that there was a lasting impact on group norms that was sustained after the event. Richard says: "While, as AMT-certified facilitators, this is possibly not a surprise to us, it's fair to say that the extent of the impact and its longevity was a surprise to all involved." ( A follow up quantitative paper, comparing the LSP experience with a standard team development awayday is in the works.) The paper builds on RTS for the Team workshops facilitated by Richard. Team cohesion and psychological safety questionnaires were filled in by participants immediately before and after the sessions and then again six weeks later. Participants were interviewed at the six week point - and the paper developed by Henley Centre for Coaching lead Jonathan Passmore and Stephanie Wheeler (who was so impressed by the results that she took the LSP certification last November - welcome to the community, Stephanie). The paper is published under Creative Commons, so you can download it freely at: https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/JWAM-03-2020-0011/full/html
