Announcing the return of our

JAPAN IN DC Program in Summer 2026

Please help share this information with interested students and parents, as well as teachers, partners, and others who can help us spread the word to DC public high school students throughout all 8 wards of the city.

Dear Friends:

Thanks to a generous grant from the United States-Japan Foundation, we are now in a position to share the good news that we will be offering our new “JAPAN IN DC” program in summer 2026. This free six-week program is open to DC public high school students (both DCPS and charter), who will be selected through a citywide application process. As in the past, JAPAN IN DC will be offered as part of the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP), which allows registered students to earn summer pay for participation.

Any student who thinks they might be interested in this program, should register with MBSYEP no later than the MARCH 6 DEADLINE to be eligible for summer pay.

About the JAPAN IN DC Summer Program:

Over six weeks (July 29-August 7, 2026), students will move around the city to explore and experience a wide variety of people, places, organizations, businesses, government agencies, and cultural institutions with connections to Japan. This is a really fun and life-transforming program – with a lot of exposure to Japan-related college and career opportunities. Students will document their experiences through writing, photography, video, social media, and other creative expression, and will develop and lead their own “Japan in DC” tours. Globalize DC will select students for JAPAN IN DC through a citywide application process, which will begin next month. Click below to learn more about the program. We plan to accept up to twenty (20) students.

If you think you're interested, this is what you need to do now:

1. Be sure to register with the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP) right away. The deadline for registration is March 6, 2026. Registering will not guarantee you a spot in our JAPAN IN DC Summer Program, but it will allow you to be paid for your participation if you are selected. Students who are not registered with MBSYEP are still eligible to apply, but WILL NOT BE PAID. You can register with MBSYEP HERE or at the link above.

2. It’s too early to apply today, but if you are interested, please fill out this brief JAPAN IN DC Student Interest Form. As soon as we’re ready to begin the student recruitment process, we’ll contact you about any information sessions (online or in-person) and how to apply. Even if you’re uncertain, it’s a good idea to sign up so we don’t miss you! And be sure to check your email inbox regularly for updates.

Any questions? Feel free to email sally@globalizedc.org.

Have a great day!
