Paws and Purpose

Grinnell College students are making a difference at the Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS) by socializing and training shelter animals to improve their chances of adoption. Led by Sophie Estrada Snow (Wabeskesiga), this initiative provides students with hands-on experience while enriching the lives of dogs and cats in need. With guidance from mentors and PALS staff, students are helping animals build confidence and learn basic manners—resulting in successful adoptions and new forever homes.

Pictured above: Grinnell Parks & Recreation Master Plan interactive map where community members can add comments and suggestions through February 15.

The Grinnell Parks & Recreation Master Plan survey offers community members a unique opportunity to directly share their thoughts and ideas. The interactive map is already filling up with innovative ideas coming in directly from Grinnell residents, friends, and neighbors. I am excited to see the results of this survey, not just as a committee member working to gather this information, but as a resident, mom, and someone who loves to utilize these amazing community spaces! Plus, we know that attractive spaces attract new people and that is so important for a small community like ours. I hope everyone takes the time to share their thoughts so the parks and rec team can work to make upgrades that reflect the voices of the community.

Drake Community Library is more than just books—it’s a gathering place where community connections thrive. As they continue expanding their role as a community hub, the library staff is proud to collaborate with partners who enrich Grinnell. Now in the second year of a five-year strategic plan, Drake Community Library continues to expand its role, providing not only books and digital resources but also Wi-Fi access, public restrooms, a food cupboard, and welcoming spaces for meetings and study.

The Caulkins Community Room, Study Spaces, and Board Room serve as a central location for programming and events, including Bucket Courses, elections, and Grinnell Chamber of Commerce Bite-Size Learning sessions. The exhibition space brings unique displays to the community, while meeting rooms provide a welcoming space for local organizations and statewide gatherings.
