Beginning February 5 – Spring Bucket Courses
Bucket Courses, organized by a group of community volunteers, will resume in February with a series of engaging and thought-provoking sessions. Held Wednesdays at 10 a.m. in the Caulkins Community Room at Drake Community Library (930 Park St.), these courses offer community members a chance to explore a variety of topics presented by distinguished speakers. These sessions are free and open to the public. The spring schedule will start on February 5 with Poweshiek County Naturalist Amy Durbin, for an engaging program on Iowa’s owls. Durbin will begin with an update on local parks and programs before diving into a fascinating look at these nocturnal birds. For the full spring schedule visit the Grinnell Bucket Courses website.
Through February 9 – Celebrating Ruth Suckow at Drake Community Library
The year 2024 marked the 100th anniversary of Ruth Suckow’s landmark novel Country People, and the Drake Community Library (930 Park St.) is honored to celebrate the life and legacy of this distinguished author with a series of special events. Suckow, a proud alumna of Grinnell High School’s Class of 1910 who attended Grinnell College for three years, made an indelible mark on American literature through her richly drawn portrayals of rural life. Her most famous novel, Country People, continues to captivate readers a century after its publication.

February 13 – Grinnell-Newburg Community School District Information Session at Grinnell College Golf Course
Grinnell-Newburg Community School District Superintendent Lisa Beames, will be present at Grinnell College Golf Course (933 13th Ave.) at 7 p.m. to discuss current issues facing the district and details on the March 4 special election. No RSVP needed.
February 14 – Celebrate 10 Years of Community Impact with the Grinnell Education Partnership
This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Grinnell Education Partnership (GEP)! Celebrate GEP at their Annual Meeting on Friday, February 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ahrens Foundation Offices (1510 Penrose Ave.). Over the past 10 years, GEP has brought together schools, nonprofits, businesses, and community members to support children and families in Grinnell. This special event will include highlights from the partnership’s initiatives, the people involved, the stories of success from the past decade, and a look ahead at what’s next for GEP. February 20 – Ballet Des Moines See the Music. Hear the Dance. Premiere at GHS
Ballet Des Moines will premiere their performance of See the Music. Hear the Dance. in Grinnell at the Grinnell High School auditorium (1333 Sunset St.) on Thursday, February 20. The celebration of classical music and its translation through dance includes two premiere choreographic works by Tom Mattingly featuring live music on stage: master pianist Douglas-Jay Burn performing Goetz Oestlind’s Four Seasons and the Aizuri Quartet playing Philip Glass’ iconic Quartet No. 5. Tickets are available for purchase online (be sure to select “Purchase Grinnell Tickets”). This event is hosted, in part, by Grinnell College.
