Paul Hales, owner of Theory Audio Design and Pro Audio Technology, guests on AV Nirvana Live. Paul starts by sharing that at the recent CEDIA Expo he did 43 thirty minute demos back to back with no breaks throughout the 3-day show. The demos were centered around the Theory Audio Design band products because it is a newer brand. Pro Audio Technology has been a favorite of high end theater designs for 25 years.
Paul reveals that he got his start after graduating in Mechanical Engineering. Soon after he formed Hales Audio selling his own high end speakers. Robert Hartley of Stereophile gave his speakers a rave review and that helped Paul really launch his company. While it was growing, he was offered a unique opportunity to become the head loudspeaker designer for QSC. He spent 4 years at QSC and developed their speaker systems.
This experience lead to the birth of Pro Audio Technology. He realized that the dynamics of home audio products were dramatically lacking. He brought his experience in designing professional audio speakers to the home but with the fidelity required for a complete home audio experience. He discovered how to make pro audio systems sound like home audio while retaining their dynamics. Thus the birth of Pro Audio Technology.
Todd askes Paul, "How do you evaluate speakers? Do you go for movies or music?" Paul answers that it is music. He pays attention to the tonal color of the instruments. At the CEDIA Show he played music for the visitors showing off the performance of his products. He loves the QSound mastered recordings and uses those to show the imaging of the loudspeakers.
He describes the issues with standard consumer product in loudspeakers. They cannot play loud and they lose their resolution when played soft. He asks Todd to guess how many acoustic watts come out of a dome tweeter with 100 watts in... He explains that 1 acoustic watt comes out of the speaker so the efficiency is terrible. If you cant to have dynamics, you cannot have an inefficient loudspeakers. Pro systems may active 30 acoustic watts under the same circumstances.
At CEDIA they hid their landscape product and played it with some very dynamic content. When they uncovered it, the crowd was shocked. Each demo had 45-50 people in the room. He showed tht if you get the speakers right, you do not need room correction.
Paul goes on to share some of the experiences from demonstrating at the show. Watch the video and then see the TEAM at New Image Marketing to offer Theory Audio Design and Pro Audio Technology in your client projects.
