Dear Chamber & Community Members,

As a result of the extreme drought we are facing, we recently sent the following letter to our elected city council members:
On the matter of water, there have been a number of good ideas shared, others perhaps unrealistic, and undoubtedly more ideas will come forward. It is great that we can celebrate the immediate milestone of nearly 40% conservation. Conservation however is not the solution for the long-term. It would incumbent upon this council to exercise their leadership in two manners.

First, those things that are in your direct control. For instance, move forward with approval for the planning, funding and building of additional wells to increase the City’s potable water supply. We understand that the cost to build a well about $1.5 million. It seems like a small sum to pay for a resource that citizens need. Additionally, the can has been kicked down the road far too long with bringing the reclaimed water into town. This council has the ability to make a decision that will have a positive impact on our community for generations to come. The approximate cost is $10-15 million for the repurposing project. The cost of capital has never been cheaper, and the City has excellent credit ratings and very good revenue streams. The time is now. These infrastructure investments are in your direct control and it would behoove you to lead our community on these initiatives.

Second, as a council, voicing the concern of our City to our elected in Sacramento and Washington D.C. should also occur. As a society we cannot conserve our way out of a shrinking water supply with a growing global population.

There are solutions out there that merely require the political will to engage them. We encourage you to direct staff time to deal with critical infrastructure initiatives. You can make a lasting difference by leading our community on this important matter.
Water is a precious resource, and one that we shouldn’t take for granted. If you agree with the proposed infrastructure initiatives presented, please join us in letting your voice be heard. We encourage you to reach out to our elected officials by visiting our Advocacy page.

Thank you,

Will Seppi, Board Chair & Tallia Hart, CEO
