Stay safe and sober during Fourth of July celebrations

The Missouri Coalition of Roadway Safety shares summer safety reminders

The hot temperatures outside are a clear indication that summer is here. Before diving into the seasonal fun of lake trips, backyard barbeques and Fourth of July celebrations, it’s important to keep safety in mind.

In 2024, 143 people died in crashes involving at least one substance-impaired driver, and 700 people were seriously injured. These numbers are down from 2023, but there’s still more that can be done to keep Missouri roadways safe for everyone.

When planning festivities for Fourth of July and the summer months ahead, make sure a safe ride home is part of those plans. If you’re drinking, don’t get behind the wheel. Arrange for a designated driver or rideshare. And for those who are not drinking, look out for your friends. Speak up and offer to give them a ride when needed. It takes everyone to keep Missouri roads safe.

During this time of year, the Missouri Coalition of Roadway Safety runs a series of Summer Safety videos with reminders for driving smart and staying safe all season long. You can find the videos, as well as more safety information, on the SaveMOLives website.

Video highlights innovative temporary roundabout

A temporary roundabout is a short-term traffic control measure set up during road construction. It’s designed to reduce delays and improve safety by keeping traffic moving in a steady, circular flow, instead of using stop signs or flaggers. A new video highlights how MoDOT's Northwest District utilized this unique tool to safely speed up maintenance operations. Be aware of fake texting scam targeting Missourians

There's a new texting scam falsely claiming to be from MoDOT. These texts mention unpaid toll fees or traffic violation charges and may pressure you to pay a fine immediately. These messages are a scam. MoDOT will never send you a text soliciting payment. If you receive these texts, do not click on any links. Report the message to the Federal Trade Commission.

Highway Safety Spotlight: Paving the Way

Driver inexperience is one of the leading causes of crashes for Missouri youth. The Paving the Way program addresses this risk by offering comprehensive driver’s education and training, including over six hours of driving lessons. The program also offers additional life-skills training which can apply toward high school graduation requirements, including Personal Finance.

Called the Natal Railway, this steam locomotive consisted of six wagons and a passenger coach. The Natal Railway merged with the Natal Government Railways in 1877. It is now restored and on display in Durban's central railway station. Learn more.
