Garden Trivia Answer
This is a bit of a trick question because there is no single pumpkin species. A pumpkin is generally defined by its appearance, typically as any winter squash with a hard rind that is typically ribbed, roughly round, and orange (though it may also be yellow or white). Because that description applies to cultivars from several squash species, there is no single "true pumpkin."
Most jack-o'-lantern pumpkins belong to Cucurbita pepo, making acorn squash, delicata squash, zucchini, and many gourds their closest relatives. Other pumpkins belong to different species. For example, some pie pumpkins (C. moschata) are most closely related to butternut squash, while giant pumpkins (C. maxima) are most closely related to Hubbard squash.
