CENTER NEWS

Discover the joy of having a pet through two new foster programs!

The Companion Pet Foster Program pairs senior cats and dogs with Gwinnett residents ages 50 and older or those living with physical disabilities. The Paws of Service Program matches active-duty military personnel and retired U.S. veterans with shelter animals.

Both programs are designed to provide a loving home for pets while offering emotional support and purpose to participants. Residents can foster — and potentially adopt — a pet that brings comfort and companionship. During the foster period, all pet food and medical needs are covered, removing barriers and making it easier for residents to welcome a furry friend into their lives.

PET TIPS

Bug Off! Pest Prevention Tips

Summer brings sunshine, backyard fun, and pesky insects. Keep pets safe and itch-free all season long with these bug-proof tips:

  • Use vet-approved preventatives. Monthly medications are the first line of defense against fleas, ticks, and other pests.
  • Clean regularly. Wash bedding often and vacuum floors and furniture to reduce hidden bugs.
  • Maintain your yard. Mow the lawn, trim bushes, and remove leaf litter, as ticks love shady, overgrown areas.
  • Check for ticks. After outdoor adventures, inspect your pet carefully, especially around ears, under legs, and between toes.

Backyard safety tips for pet owners

Your backyard may seem like a pet paradise, but hidden hazards can turn playtime into a trip to the vet. Use this checklist to help keep your outdoor space fun and safe for your furry friends:

  • Secure the perimeter. Check for loose fence boards or gaps where pets could escape.
  • Know your plants. Common backyard plants like lilies, azaleas, and sago palms are toxic to pets.
  • Store chemicals safely. Fertilizers, weed killers, and citronella candles can be harmful if ingested.
  • Remove tempting items. Put away gardening tools, gloves, and hose ends that pets may chew.
  • Supervise outdoor play, and watch for wildlife, from snakes to toads.

SUCCESS STORIES

Our former shelter dog Romeo is still stealing hearts in his golden years! His forever family in Philadelphia shared sweet photos of his super chill 10th birthday celebration. After spending several months at our shelter, Romeo found his new home through Old Tails Senior Animal Rescue. Thanks to the generosity of pilot Craig Roderus, Romeo jetted from South Carolina to Pennsylvania in late January. Now that he’s settled in, his days are filled with cozy naps and plenty of snuggles with his family, who says he’s a gentle, well-mannered companion. Romeo’s journey reminds us that sometimes the best chapters come later — his story is just getting started.

HELPING HANDS

Huge thanks to QTS Data Centers for making a difference in the lives of shelter pets! A wonderful group of employees from the Suwanee location joined us at Rhodes Jordan Park for Dog Day Out, taking several shelter dogs on much-needed walks and playtime around the beautiful park.

The day gave these dogs a break from shelter life, complete with wagging tails, happy barks, and friendly faces. These outings not only provide exercise and socialization for our dogs but also help boost their confidence and improve their chances of adoption. If your business or organization would like to have their own Dog Day Out, call 770.339.3200 or email AWEVolunteers@GwinnettCounty.com.
