"Be flexible, but stick to your principles." - Eleanor Roosevelt

Building on the positive energy from January’s community meetings, our students have shown amazing leadership by helping shape expectations to make our school a cleaner, kinder, and more connected place.

Advisory in February will center on positive relationships and conflict resolution, giving students regular opportunities to build a stronger, more supportive community together. Students will continue to participate in restorative circles in advisory to practice listening, empathy, and collaborative problem-solving.

This month’s executive functioning focus is flexibility, an essential skill for adapting to change, managing frustrations, and working well with others. By practicing flexibility, students learn to adjust their plans, consider different perspectives, and navigate challenges more effectively, both in and out of the classroom.

Winston Students Take to the Rink with the San Diego Gulls!

Thursday, February 5th, was anything but ordinary at The Winston School! Our middle school, 9th, and 10th-grade students laced up their sneakers and hit the blacktop for an exciting street hockey clinic hosted by the San Diego Gulls.

As part of the Gulls’ mission to bring hockey to youth across Greater San Diego, their coaching staff led our students through a fast-paced 90-minute session introducing the fundamentals of the sport—stickhandling, passing, and shooting. The energy soared as students practiced their skills and finished the day with a friendly scrimmage that brought out their teamwork, sportsmanship, and school spirit.

The event provided not only hockey fun but also lessons in character, collaboration, and healthy living. With all the equipment—and enthusiasm—supplied by the Gulls, every student could get in on the action. By the time the scrimmage wrapped up, smiles and laughter made it clear: at Winston, hockey really is for everyone!

Mental health awareness and treatment for our adolescents is a critical issue for parents and schools. In an effort to share important and helpful resources, Winston School has partnered with the Didi Hirsch Suicide Prevention Center to provide a caring and informative educational opportunity for parents. This 90-minute Zoom presentation will provide parents with an overview of suicide and ways in which to prevent it in our adolescent children.
