Happy 250 America!

A Message From Executive Director Ken Bigos:

I want to wish all of you a happy and safe America 250! This is a significant occasion and Philadelphia will certainly be celebrating!

Two hundred and fifty years ago, America's founders declared that the destiny of the people would not be governed by a crown, but by citizens represented through self-government. What we now take for granted was viewed as a bold experiment—the belief that ordinary people possess the wisdom and the right to determine what is best for themselves and their communities.

In many ways, the work that AHCOPA counselors perform each day helps families realize the American ideals of "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness". Whether helping a first-time homebuyer achieve the dream of homeownership, preserving a family’s home through foreclosure prevention, or ensuring that wealth can be passed on to future generations, our work strengthens the foundation upon which thriving communities are built.

Some days these ideals are not easily realized. Economic uncertainty, rising housing costs, and unexpected hardships can place these aspirations out of reach for many families. Yet, throughout our nation’s history, progress has always been driven by people who believed that opportunity should not be reserved for a select few, but should be within reach for everyone willing to work toward a better future.

As we commemorate America’s 250th birthday, let us remember that freedom is not simply measured by the rights we possess, but by the opportunities we create for others. May we continue the work of building communities where every family has the chance to pursue stability, prosperity, and the dream of a place to call home.

From all of us at Affordable Housing Centers of Pennsylvania, we wish you and your loved ones a joyful and safe Independence Day. Happy America 250, and may we continue striving to form a more perfect union for generations yet to come.

New Rules Could Affect Philadelphia Renters

Approximately 170,000 renters in Philadelphia qualify for HUD-benefits. Under a new proposed rule, meant to target non-citizens, all people receiving or applying for HUD assistance will need to provide proof of citizenship. Approximately 8%-11% of American citizens do not have access to these documents and may lose the benefits they need to stay in their home.

Of those 170,000 renters, around 49,000 are non-citizens and may have to decide between breaking up their family, moving out of their home, or becoming homeless.

Read more about the potential impacts of this proposed rule on our blog.

AHCOPA Board and Staff Strategic Retreat

This month, the staff and Board of Directors at AHCOPA came together for our strategic planning retreat. It was an opportunity to reflect on who we are as an organization, the values that guide our work, how far we have come, and the priorities that will shape our future.

Through thoughtful facilitation, our staff and board engaged in candid conversations about the challenges facing our communities and how we can respond. The discussion demonstrated the commitment and passion that drives our mission. We are excited about what lies ahead as we continue working together to expand opportunity, strengthen homeownership, and build more resilient communities.
