Honored to present Ms. Shirley Shillingford the Boston City Council Black History Month Milestones in Time: Cultivator Who Paved the Way Award. English High School Bus Drop Off

Civic Engagement Day, hosted by the Commission for Persons with Disabilities, is an opportunity for Boston residents with disabilities to learn about all of the ways they can get involved with their local government. I attended on October 12th, 2022, to meet the residents and listen to any concerns they may have.

Our special education high school students came to City Hall that day and a student from English High spoke up, with the support of his assistive technology, and told us that he wanted our help moving the wheelchair bus drop off location, that is at the trash and delivery door. He informed us that the dumpster is in the way and it is hard for the teachers to navigate around the barrels and the poles to go through that small entrance in the back of the school.

Through my persistence, conversations are underway with various departments, and although things never move fast enough for me in government, I am hoping that the brave student who spoke up for himself in a packed room with the Mayor, Council President, and two City Councilors At-Large, will have a new entrance that is meant for students, not trash and deliveries. I will continue to advocate for our special education students, as well as all of our students, and hope that the team working on this is able to come up with the right solution so all of our children feel valued and respected in our Boston Public Schools.
