Pet and Owner Aid Partners

CVMA is dedicated to the animal and human bond. Realizing that challenges exist for some owners to afford food and wellness care for their pets, we are pleased to partner with the following organization whose mission is to meet these needs.

Rescue Pack

Filling Bowls and Bellies for Pets in Need

Rescue Pack is a non-profit organization with a mission to provide pet food and supplies to rescues and residents in need. The funds that the rescues save on the food the organization provides is used for wellness care for the animals in the shelters. Rescue Pack also has pop-up pantries in areas of economic need for food pick up. Alongside the pantries, they sponsor pet vaccination and microchipping clinics.

If you are connected with a company that has food that is about to expire that could be utilized by pets and their owners, contact Rescue Pack.

Normalize pet nutrition conversations at every veterinary visit

AVMA News

As pet obesity rates continue to climb nationwide, nutrition is top of mind for pet owners and veterinarians alike. The Purina Institute Handbook of Canine and Feline Well-Pet Nutrition, launched in August, provides evidence-based recommendations for veterinary care teams to help them prioritize pet nutrition in practice. More.

Feline diabetes mellitus: Advancements in treatment and the role of the veterinary team

Ellen Carozza, LVT, VTS (CP-Feline)

Veterinary teams enhance feline diabetes management through personalized care, effective communication, and evolving treatment options for improved quality of life. Feline diabetes mellitus (feline DM) has been recognized in veterinary medicine since the 1970s, with a significant increase in prevalence correlated with trends in feline obesity and sedentary lifestyles, particularly noted since the 1990s. More.

Improving noninvasive diagnosis of cutaneous and gastrointestinal forms of Pythium insidiosum infections in dogs: complementary roles of serum-based ELISA and polymerase chain reaction

Subarna Barua, PhD, Asfiha Tarannum, MS, Joseph Newton, DVM, Leonel Mendoza, PhD, Kelly Chenoweth, BS, Priscilla Barger, PhD, and Chengming Wang, DVM, PhD

While ELISA is well suited for first-line screening due to its high sensitivity, PCR provides critical specificity and broader detection, especially in challenging cutaneous cases and when alternative pathogenic oomycetes are suspected. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was highly effective for initial diagnosis and monitoring treatment response, and PCR was most useful for identifying active infections or relapses. More.

Benchmarking data plus elevating efficiency equals practice productivity

Malinda Larkin

To help create stronger and profitable practices, Frederic B. Ouedraogo, PhD, senior economist and associate director in the AVMA Veterinary Economics Division, encouraged practice owners to create their own data assets to evaluate the health of their own practice and engage in benchmarking analyses. More.

A look at what’s new in reptile analgesia

Olivia A. Petritz, DVM, DACZM

Most veterinarians are in agreement reptiles can feel pain, but difficulty recognizing pain in reptiles was cited as a major impediment for providing appropriate analgesia by a recent survey of veterinarians.1 Only ~33 percent of veterinarians in that survey believed they had adequate knowledge of analgesia in reptiles, but 82 percent of respondents reported providing analgesia to their reptile patients. Veterinary Medicine and Surgery Practice Act of 2004

The state of Illinois has a Veterinary Medicine and Surgery Practice Act of 2004 which governs the practice of veterinary medicine to ensure public and animal safety and welfare.  It defines the qualifications and licensing requirements for veterinarians and veterinary technicians, sets standards for professional conduct, and prohibits unlicensed individuals from practicing veterinary medicine. The law also governs the veterinarian-client-patient relationship and provides mechanisms for disciplinary action against those who violate the rules.  Review the full statute.
