Things really heated up over the Summer with IDDSI Events and news!

A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

The 4th UK IDDSI Festival was once again a huge success. Congratulations to the UK IDDSI Festival 2024 planning team, IRG, and all the amazing volunteers, sponsors and presenters for the work and support. Participants followed ‘A Day in the Life’ of persons with dysphagia with presentations about porridge, oral care, the newly launched Restaurant card initiative (collaboration between The Swallows UK, OHK & IDDSI), taking medications, enhancing nutrition & hydration with texture modification and simple, yet amazing things we can do to enhance the quality of life for those living with dysphagia.

2024 also featured the 1st IDDSI Masterclass facilitated by Ben Hanson, Peter Lam, James Ball & Preston Walker.  Participants were subjected to experiential learning simulating swallowing difficulties and were challenged to critically think about food from ingredient selection, processing, cooking techniques and how they are served to meet IDDSI textural level characteristics.  Congratulations to our 1st UK IDDSI Festival Masterclass graduates!

Every day, electronic records around the world record a vast amount of health care data. So, the real challenge is ensuring professionals have the right ideas for communicating the care they provide and can ensure safe, effective, and high-quality care, particularly in transitions of care.

This webinar will establish what professionals need from Electronic Health Records using the clinical terminology SNOMED CT to support the care they provide when working with persons who have dysphagia, how consistent nutrition processes and terminology ensure meaningful communication, and how nutrition standards aim to offer the necessary guidance and structure for electronic health record exchange.

Join us as we explore opportunities and challenges in the current state of nutrition terminology and standards, and ways for professionals to become more knowledgeable about this work.

The Brazil IRG managed a booth at the recent ABD Congress, where Luis F. Riquelme, IDDSI Vice-Chair, also presented a half-day workshop on IDDSI implementation that included a laboratory for IDDSI testing methods practice. He also partook in two keynote panels aimed at discussing improvements in practice and looking at future trends.

Great conversations, great connections and great sharing all around!

Japan: At the 30th Annual Meeting of the Japan Society of Dysphagia Rehabilitation at Fukuoka, Japan, we held the first full-scale seminar on IDDSI in Japan with the practical training.

Despite the strong storm (The 10th Typhoon), the seminar was very successful with 30 enthusiastic clinicians and researchers who had been awaiting to attend this session. At the seminar, Prof. Catriona M. Steele, Prof. Jun Kayashita, and Prof. Mari Nakao-Kato gave lectures to show an overview and history of IDDSI, rationale of IDDSI, and ideas on how to use IDDSI.

After the talk, members of the IDDSI Japan Reference Group facilitated the group work and demonstrated spoon tilt test, fork separation test and fork pressure test (with tongue pressure less than 17 kPa or 390g with kitchen scale, using two types of sample foods). All the participants were enthusiastic about the practical training.

According to the results of the questionnaire after the seminar, 90% of the participants found the overall content of the seminar interesting, 10% found it rather interesting, and 90% found the content of the hands-on workshop on the evaluation method interesting. In response to the question, "Where do you want to use what you learned today?", attenders replied " for product development" or "to provide guidance to families at hospitals."

From responses, each participant seemed to have a desire to incorporate it into their own fields. The responses were willingness to use it in facilities, at home, and in research, or to use it to check menus. Some of them answered to use to evaluate the hospital food, nursing care, or to teach it in classes at university.

Based on the feedback from the participants of this seminar, the IDDSI Japan Reference Group will move forward with next steps. Congratulations to Prof. Mari Nakao-Kato and the Japan IRG for this successful seminar!
