Needless to say, reopening is welcome news...
by Dinah Wolff, President
As I write this Spring Yardarm message at the end of February, it's difficult to ignore a major concern for many of our patrons - the scheduling of their two Covid-19 vaccinations. Many have been frustrated by the process, with some calling the library for assistance or advice. We look forward to a time when enough feel protected, and can safely be out and about as in the past.
The red/yellow/green status of nearby Cape towns has changed significantly in the past several weeks, allowing us to feel confident in reopening the building to visitors starting March 2; we will still offer curbside pick-up for those who prefer that method.
See below for our reopening guidelines, meant for the comfort and safety of both patrons and staff. Needless to say, reopening is welcome news - Leslie, Carol, and Carrie have missed you all, and many patrons look forward to browsing the collection.
We ask that our visitors try to remember to social distance, especially in the circulation area, which appears to be the social hub of the building - everyone loves to chat with our staff and volunteers. Welcome back!

YPL Is Reopening Its Doors To Patrons!
| |
Welcome Back!
Read below to see how we are reopening.
Curbside pickup is still encouraged and preferred.
If you enter the library, please be aware of and abide by the following:
* We are limiting the number of patrons in the library.
* You are required to wear a mask (properly covering your mouth and nose)
the entire time you are in the library.
* Please limit your visit to no more than 30 minutes.
* You must maintain social distancing throughout the library, and especially at
the checkout counter.
* One public computer will be available, for a maximum of 30 minutes per
patron per day (no matter if there is a patron waiting).
* The computer will be available on a first come, first serve basis. If someone
is on the computer when you arrive, we ask you to please wait in your car
(or outside the building) until it is available, unless you have other business
at the library.
* The copier and fax are available for patron self-use.
* If you are not feeling well, please do not enter the library.
To our YPL Patrons -
Thank you so much for abiding by these rules.
Doing so will keep everyone as safe as possible, while still allowing you to enjoy the library. We are so happy to be able to be open again, and we welcome you back whole-heartedly.
All materials being returned should be left in the book drop (we are still quarantining everything for at least 72 hours). If the drop is full, or the item is too big, just check with staff at the front desk.
LIBRARY HOURS:
TUESDAY to FRIDAY, 10 AM to 3 PM & SATURDAY, 10 AM to Noon
Thank you so much for visiting Yarmouth Port Library.
We hope to resume more of our normal operations incrementally as the pandemic recedes. In the meantime, we appreciate your patronage and support.

Our doors are open...What's on the other side?
|
We are happy once again to do our best to take care
of your library needs...
by Leslie Altman, Librarian
Perhaps you have seen pictures of people who look like their pets. Although I do not look a lot like my cat, Nimue, we do have some common qualities. Like most cats, I do not like closed doors. With cats, the reasons are similar to mine:
* They can tell that there's something on the other side of the closed door
that compels them to want to investigate. * They know that one or more members of their human "staff" are on the
other side of the door, and they don't want to be prevented from relating
to these people. * They consider the area beyond the door to be part of their territory, which
they feel the need to patrol. * They are persistently curious - "What's on the other side?"
I am delighted our doors are open again and that we can let you in to investigate, to talk with you, and to let you see what's new in the library. We are happy once again to do our best to take care of your library needs, now that we can again indulge our cat behaviors.
Right now the only virtual programs that we are producing are the book group meetings, on the third Thursday of the month at 2 PM, and the "Chapter One Project" readings. Everyone is invited to the book group meeting, whether you have read the book or are only thinking about reading it. It's a pleasure to get together with other readers to talk "face to face" on Zoom. We have fun and we welcome newcomers. Just ask us for the Zoom link and you can join. As a special treat, our May meeting will be hosted by Mindy Todd on The Point radio broadcast on WCAI and the author will join us. You can find our titles below.
Everyone is also invited to produce a reading for the "Chapter One Project" on the website. If you haven't yet listened, check it out. You may be inspired to read something new. And I am sure you will love hearing the voice of one of our youngest patrons reading "I Hear."
We have more exciting news! For the first time YPL will be participating in the Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the festival runs from July 9-18, 2021. Although we plan to have a garden sale, we don't know whether we will be able to host our annual book sale. The Hydrangea Festival will provide an opportunity for a socially-distanced fundraiser. Find out more about the Hydrangea Festival and how you can help elsewhere in The Yardarm. Thanks to a gift from a generous patron, our fee to participate has been paid for us!
Elsewhere in this edition of The Yardarm, you will find lists of new materials arriving in the next three months. Please feel free to request items that have not yet been published. It's a real pleasure to make items available to you on the day that they are released.

Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, it's off to work we go...
|
by Carrie Bearse, Assistant Librarian/Children's Services
I may not be mining for diamonds like the Seven Dwarfs, but making sure our patrons (young and older) get their books, videos, etc. seems much more important to me! And, although I do not literally sing on the way to work (I usually listen to audiobooks for the short drive), I can honestly say that I love coming to work, and each day I unlock the door with a smile on my face.
My one year "work anniversary" is fast approaching and I truly am so happy I was asked to join this wonderful YPL community! But what a year it has been...a year unlike any other. Constantly readjusting our expectations (and safety precautions!), trying to plan for the unplannable, and wondering when we will be able to take advantage of and re-experience all that is around us, and to catch up with friends and family. Fingers crossed...hopefully all will be right soon. In the meantime, we are here for you when you are "desperate for a book" -- yes, we get at least one call a day with that lament, and we are happy to assist.
Please be sure to check the YPL website and Facebook page for new themed children's stories each month and other fun resources, call or email to request a takeaway craft or a librarian's choice book selection pack, or reach out with any questions or book suggestions.
As I have said before, we are here for you...your requests and your interests combined with your kindness, community spirit, love of books, and knowledge (or just light entertainment on occasion) make YPL what it is - such a vibrant part of this village, and a bit beyond. You nurture and create happy YPL staff...you are the diamonds, and so much more! Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho!

American Dirt
by Jeanine Cummins
Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cra cks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable.
Even though she knows they'll never sell, Lydia stocks some of her all-time favorite books in her store. And then one day a man enters the shop to browse and comes up to the register with a few books he would like to buy-two of them her favorites. Javier is erudite. He is charming. And, unbeknownst to Lydia, he is the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city. When Lydia's husband's tell-all profile of Javier is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

The Vanishing Half
The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern bla ck community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities.
Many years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past.
Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined.
What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters' storylines intersect?

May:
Thursday, May 20th at 10 AM
Special meeting with Mindy Todd of WCAI's (local NPR station) The Point. We will be discussing a book with a Cape Cod theme. Leslie will lead a follow-up meeting at the regular time (2 PM) on the 20th for those who can't make the morning time.
Cottage for Sale: Must Be Moved by Kate Whouley.

When Kate Whouley saw the classified ad for an abandoned vacation cottage, she began to dream. Transport the cottage through four Cape Cod towns. Attach it to my three-room house. Create more space for my work and life. Smart, single, and self-employed, Kate was used to fending for herself. But she wasn't prepared for half the surprises, complications, and self-discoveries of her house-moving adventure.

2021 YPL MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN
|
The Yarmouth Port Library is very much a community
institution and community support continues to be a
critical element in our continued success.
by Les Peat, Treasurer
As we go to press (2/28/21) with this issue of The Yardarm, the total raised for 2021 is $31,695, comfortably exceeding this year's lowered goal of $30,000, but considerably short of our traditional goal of $40,000. I continue to believe that the larger goal is achievable; if you have not yet given, please consider a gift and be as generous as you can.
While we are blessed with a substantial endowment, and while it has performed very well of late, what goes up can come down, and to be prudent, we should keep our reliance on the endowment for operating funds to a minimum.
As of press time, I am also pleased to say that the following businesses (see below) will be listed as members for 2021, and we hope that more will join them.
Our heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed to, or will contribute to, the Campaign. The Yarmouth Port Library is very much a community institution and community support continues to be a critical element in our continued success.
One final note: should you wish to make an initial or additional contribution to the Campaign, please click here to download a Campaign Membership form. If you are uncertain as to whether you have already given, I will be happy to check for you. Please feel free to call or email me at 508-362-7660 or wl.peat@gmail,com

PETERSON'S MARKET

BUSINESS SPONSOR APPRECIATION
PETERSON'S MARKET
918 Route 6A, Yarmouth Port * 508-362-2147
Peterson's is a new business sponsor for the library, but hardly new to the community, having served as Yarmouth Port's local grocery for many years. Now one of the Smithfield Family of Markets, Peterson's has highly regarded meat and deli departments, a fish market, beers, wines, and liquors, take-out pizza and catering services - truly one stop shopping in a friendly village atmosphere.
And be sure to visit their sister store, the Barnstable Market in Barnstable village for a similar, yet different, shopping experience.
Peterson's is located at 918 Route 6A in Yarmouth Port. Hours are currently 7 AM to 7 PM and delivery service is available. Their telephone number is 508-362-2147, and their website may be found at petersonsmarket.com

The Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival...Gardens needed. Local non-profits benefit!
| |
Any type of garden is suitable for a tour.
No hydrangeas required!
by Leslie Altman, Librarian
The Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival is an annual celebration of the region's blue, pink, and white signature flowers and "everything gardens" on Cape Cod! This ten-day festival's main attractions are the daily tours of private gardens, each designed and maintained by the individual homeowners and each carrying a unique charm. Local nonprofits benefit from the tours.
You can help! We need gardens! We would love to have 5-10 Yarmouth Port gardens open to the public. All you need to do is let us know your garden is available, or you could recommend a garden that belongs to someone you know or to a local business. Any type of garden is suitable for a tour. No hydrangeas required!
We will also need "docents!" Docents will sit at the entrance to the garden and collect the $5 fee from each visitor or lead visitors through the garden. If you want to host your own tour, we will help by providing a ticket taker. If not, we can provide a second docent. We can also give you an opportunity to give a short talk, if you wish, about your garden.
Some gardens allow for artists to draw or paint in the gardens that are on display. If that activity appeals to you, please let us know. Having participated as a visitor and a docent in the past, I can report that seeing what others have done in their gardens can be inspiring. Even if you are not a gardener, visiting a Cape Cod garden is always a treat. Thanks to our anonymous patron for paying our registration fee.
