May 2024

Members and Friends!

May is National Small Business Month. I'm excited to kick off this celebratory time by recognizing the incredible entrepreneurs and small business owners who are the heart and soul of our community. Small businesses drive local economic growth, create jobs, and foster innovation. They are the backbone that supports our vibrant cities/county, and their resilience and adaptability, especially in recent challenging times, are truly inspiring. Throughout May, I encourage everyone to support our small business community by shopping local, utilizing their services, and advocating for policies that empower these innovative enterprises. Please join me in honoring the small business owners who pour their passion, creativity, and tireless effort into making our city thrive. Together, we can ensure a bright future for entrepreneurship in Miami-Dade.

In this month’s newsletter…

Grants…Funding Opportunities and Education

As you read through May’s newsletter, you will find opportunities that may assist your business, from funding opportunities to a financial boost stemming from several grants and/or educational programs to make you and your company better at what you do. One such grant MDGLCC unveiled earlier this week is the NGLCC Community Impact Grant (Funds Provided by GrubHub). This is the 3rd year of this collaboration, and millions of dollars have been invested (nationally and locally) in our important restaurant industry. To apply for this impactful grant (awards from $5K to $25K) - Community Impact Grant Application

REMINDER: New Membership Pricing Now In Place

Beginning April 1st, my friends, my friends, the Basic and Bronze Level dues increased for the first time since 2013…that is over ten years. All other membership levels will remain where they currently are. However, we will add a new industry category to our membership for our hotel members. Beginning next month, all new memberships will be assessed at the new rates. For renewing members, you will have until June 1st, when the new rates go into effect for you. For members wanting to take advantage of the current rate, you are eligible to renew before June 1, 2024, without affecting your current renewal month. The new rates are:

·      Basic - $400/year

·      Bronze - $850/year

Hotel Industry Rates(*)

·      Boutique Hotel Level (less than 50 rooms) - $745

·      Standard Hotel Level (more than 50; less than 100) - $1595

Programming (www.gaybizmiami.com for details)

Later this month, our MDGLCC Councils will host the first of several panels that we believe will help our businesses and members understand what legislative changes have gone into effect (and their implications), and those that no longer impact our lives. The first of the panels, State of Our Community – the DEI Landscape, will take place on May 30th. Some prestigious speakers are lined up to discuss this impactful area in our business lives. Details will be forthcoming in our weekly PluggedIN e-newsletter and www.GayBizMiami.com. We will follow up in June/July with another State of Our Community luncheon focused on tourism and the local challenges of this critical economic engine.

Highlights to put on your calendar are:

5/7 – REC Joins Zipcar for NACTO Conference Kick-off @ Cerveceria La Tropical

5/22 – Hospitality Council @ Blue Lavender

5/30 – State of Our Community – the DEI Landscape (ERG Council & GALLA)

5/30 – YPN @ Business Optimization Group

5/31 – Pride at the Park – Marlins vs. Rangers

Advocacy

Your chamber will be traveling to Washington D.C. with our friends at the Coral Gables Chamber to educate legislators about the economic vitality and impact of the LGBT dollar, which exceeds $1.4 trillion nationally. We will continue to work locally with our appointed LGBTQIA+ Advisory Boards (Miami-Dade, City of Miami, and Miami Beach) to maximize our influence to combat negative legislation before it occurs. For more information about the May D.C. trip, please get in touch with MDGLCC.

NGLCC – The ROAD TO PALM SPRINGS – ALMOST SOLD OUT!!!

As one of the largest affiliate chambers of the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce, we complement the work advancing around LGBTBE Certification, education, and business connectivity. We have a large contingent anticipated, and we always have a great time. This year, we will convene in Palm Springs, CA; this is a fantastic opportunity to connect with our US Affiliate and International chambers, mix and learn from national DEI experts, and learn how to improve your business opportunity from Fortune 500 procurement professionals. We will be working on programming to assist our LGBTBEs and other stakeholders in preparing for the conference. For more about this year’s conference, visit NGLCC.

I hope to see you all at one of our many events this month and throughout the year!

Most U.S. adults (86%) say small businesses have a positive effect on the way things are going in the country these days, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. Small businesses, in fact, receive by far the most positive reviews of any of the nine U.S. institutions we asked about, outranking even the military and churches.

As National Small Business Week approaches, take a look at small businesses in the U.S. and public attitudes about them, based on federal data and Center surveys

New Bridge Program

Fully Funded Transatlantic Fellowship for Young Professionals

New Bridge Program, organized by Atlantik-Brücke, a German non-profit organization that aims to deepen cooperation between Germany, Europe, and North America. The New Bridge Program is a fully funded transatlantic fellowship for young professionals between 25 and 35 years that aims to increase the diversity within transatlantic relations by including historically excluded perspectives. This includes Black, Indigenous, and people of color; immigrant communities; people who belong to religious minorities; the LGBTQIA+ community; those from rural areas; and other marginalized groups. The program invites young leaders from the U.S. and Germany to engage in a participatory, interdisciplinary, and sustained exchange about transatlantic relations during ten-day study tours to each other’s countries. For both programs, we partner with a wide range of organizations and individuals, like the NAACP, UnidosUS, the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS), Advance Native Political Leadership, the LGBTQIA+ Center, academic institutions, and government offices.

This year’s program for participants from the U.S. takes place from September 5 through 14 and begins with predeparture activities in Washington, D.C., and will then take the fellows to Belgium and Germany. We would like to invite you to become one of our partners and nominate up to three candidates from your network, who are then asked to apply until June 19. Alternatively, or additionally, we are also happy to share the link to the direct application with you, which you are welcome to share with your network.

To be eligible, the following qualifications are required:

  • Age between 25 and 35 years.
  • Conversational English.
  • Residence in the United States, eligibility to enter Germany and Belgium
  • Professional, academic, personal, or other achievements.
  • Openness to new experiences, interest in international relations, and willingness to actively participate in transatlantic discourse.

We would like to point out that we cannot guarantee full accessibility in public spaces, transportation, and accommodation. If you have any questions about accessibility, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are aware of this challenge and are seeking to find solutions to make the program more inclusive.

If you would like to learn more or discuss other ideas of how to collaborate, we are offering an informational Zoom session with program alumni on May 6, 12:00 pm EST, 09:00 am PST. If you are interested in attending this event, we kindly ask you to register in advance: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcrce6uqjgjE9T_NTw7OCbCMu4_vaOc6atE

If this date does not work for you or if you prefer a one-on-one conversation, my colleagues and I are more than happy to jump on a call any time.

Please let us know if you are interested, and we will send you the call for nominations and link to the application portal.

We would be delighted to welcome you as a partner in our network!
