ELLERY SCHEMPP, PRIMARY STUDENT IN
U.S. SUPREME COURT'S LANDMARK 1963 CASE
RE: SEPARATION OF CHURCH & STATE,
SENDS MRFF A TOUCHING EMAIL

Ellery Schempp was the primary student in the
landmark 1963 United States Supreme Court case of Abington School District v. Schempp, the case in which it was ruled that Bible readings in public schools are unconstitutional.
"MRFF is extremely honored to have received such a touching email from this heroic man, Ellery Schempp, who himself had the courage to face fury while standing under a national spotlight to fight for the constitutionally guaranteed separation of church and state."

The below email was sent to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation’s Founder and President Mikey Weinstein from Ellery Schempp on 2/9/22:

From: "Ellery Schempp” <email address witheld>
Subject: brick for courage and pioneering
Date: February 9, 2022 at 9:18:14 PM MST
To: "'Mikey Weinstein'" <mikey@militaryreligiousfreedom.org>

Dear Mikey and MRFF,

Mikey Weinstein is a wonderful and courageous real pioneer. The ACLU, for all the good they do, was reluctant to reach into the military. Likewise Americans United and Freedom from Religion FFRF, and American Atheists and Humanists--all are great allies. But the gap between the civilian and military worlds could only be bridged by Mikey. Using the UCMJ, using their oaths to our Constitution, this is something only Mikey has been able to do.

The military brass is not noted for being gentle toward dissenters, and the ranks have attracted zealots and bigots and hypocrites of many stripes. The violent and threatening mail you get --and handle so wittily--is evidence of your courage.

With hearty applause for Mikey and the MRFF team,

Ellery Schempp

Happy Tiger New Year.

"Carey Cash? Really?"

Dear Secretary Deltoro and Admiral Gilday,

I was astonished to learn of the announced appointment of CAPT Carey Cash as Deputy Chief of Chaplains. I am dismayed to learn that he is even still in uniform, let alone elevated to such an influential position. It makes me question whether any vetting was done at all! His prior statements and writings make it clear that his attitudes disqualify him as a chaplain at any level.
Our Sailors and Marines of all faiths deserve better. Much better. Chaplains need to serve our brave members in uniform first, and their sectarian agendas NEVER. It’s abundantly clear that CAPT Cash has no understanding of this important and fundamental responsibility.

Very respectfully,
Bill Campbell
