Week #4:
Dia de los Muertos
Both Poignant and Celebratory

November 1st and 2nd
DOD Altar KCMuseum
“Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them.” George Eliot

While Halloween will be dominating the thoughts of many this weekend, for others their thoughts and activities will be focused on creating family altars, gathering momentos, fixing foods and lighting candles. This coming Sunday and Monday, November 1st and 2nd are All Saints Day and All Souls Day, celebrated in many places as Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead.

Several weekends ago the Kansas City Museum hosted a community viewing of the inspiring altar pictured above. Tonight (Thursday) they are hosting a Facebook Live program about virtual Day of the Dead celebrations this year. Tune in if you can!
DOD NelsonMuseum

Every year for the past 9 years, the Nelson-Atkins Museum has also created and hosted amazing collaborative Dia de los Muertos exhibits and activities in the huge Corinthian Hall.

In this unusual year, the creative staff at the Nelson has created a virtual 10-year anniversary celebration of past exhibits, stories, traditions and how to make papel picado.

Nine years of amazing pictures and celebrations start with a click here to the Nelson. There are beautiful stories to hear and information on how to create your own celebrations.

Dia de los Muertos celebrations started at World's Window with our first altar in 1989 created by Greg Johnson.

Before any other city-wide celebrations, Jenny Mendez from Mattie Rhodes Center helped us understand this touching time of remembrance.

In subsequent years paper filled our walls so people could write memories and post messages to loved ones departed from their earthly presence.

For years our staff also helped create altars or installations at Mattie Rhodes Center as a part of their celebrations.

Gathering our staff over the years to create altars and displays has always been a very special time of togetherness and stories.
DOD Crafts
In Brookside we started adding celebrations on our sidewalk with craft projects and photo ops and time for visiting.
DOD WWAltar
We created simple altars over the years - in our back room, in the main room, in our front window. We've invited friends to write memories and post them. This year we invite you to create your own special altar or remembrance table. Think of those special people in your life whose memories your honor and cherish. Gather their pictures, add some food or drink they enjoyed, scatter flowers or put in vases, and light some candles. Invite the strength and goodness you learned from them to be a part of this special weekend for you.
DOD Altar Jan 1020
The other morning I again lit the candles on my own personal altar. Family members, friends, even our beloved dog Bitz and cat Baker looked back at me. And I felt surrounded by love and so much gratitude.

In the front window of our store our own "Frida" reaches out in hugs this year when we can't give them in person. This is a great week to feel extra hugs! Celebrate the goodness and beauty of Dia de los Muertos with us!

Shopping - what's new?
It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.
No, not out on our sales floor, but in the boxes we're unpacking.
The nativities and ornaments are still stashed, but hopefully ready for an unveiling on Friday, November 6th.
For right now, though, there's lots of NEW to explore!
WWColorsOfFall 1020

Feel safer with your own Personal Shopping Time?
Still not ready to shop with other customers around?
We can make that happen!
LV Della and Jan
Last week Della hosted one of our long-time, beloved customers in a closed-store, personal shopping hour. Sandra spent the entire hour wandering and choosing and trying on and exploring while the store was quiet. With no worries about how safe she was in a more public space, she shopped and we wrapped, and she left with new outfits for herself and many, many presents wrapped and ready for gifting.

Cherish your own safe, personal shopping space? Call Della (816-361-2500) and we'll find a perfect time!
Greetings!
Welcome to the weekend of Dia de los Muertos. If you choose to create an altar of any kind, please feel free to e-mail me a picture of it. We'd love to see your celebration of those who have been special in your life. For those of you venturing to outside events, you might also want to check out the November 7th Day of the Dead festival in KCK sponsored by the Central Avenue Betterment Association. It will no doubt be fabulous again this year. Check it out here. Don't forget your mask!

We thank you for your continued shopping support. And I can't say it enough times - YOU are an important part of what makes World's Window so special! THANK YOU!

Thinking of you.
