The Center for Mind-Body Medicine
Our Commitment to Healing the Wounds of Racism, Oppression, and Inequity

The events of the last several months have been deeply disturbing. They have also been catalytic. As CMBM has responded to the coronavirus pandemic, we, like the rest of the country, have become painfully aware of the disparity in the death toll between people of color, the poor, and the elderly, and the rest of our population. During this time, The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) has brought our trauma healing work online to make easily available the programs of population-wide trauma healing that we have successfully implemented for 25 years here in the US and overseas.
In our present online efforts, as well as in all the work we’ve previously done, we’ve had a significant emphasis on working with people who have been marginalized and made vulnerable by poverty and historical trauma, as well as during wars and climate-related disasters. We’ve also had a deep commitment to bringing together people who have good reason to mistrust and fear one another – in the Balkans, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and here in the US.

Childhood Health In The Midst Of COVID
"Mom, I think Michelle is depressed!” Nicole’s voice over the phone held a trace of concern. “What does a six-year-old have to be depressed about?” I asked. My granddaughter has lacked nothing since her birth. As the first and only grandchild so far on both sides of the family, with grandparents and great grandparents; she is doted on to the fullest extent possible.

But that was the spring of 2020. The six-year-old’s world was like an open bag of puzzle pieces turned upside down in the wind. Pieces were missing. Suddenly nothing fit clearly. There was no morning rush out the door to school, no hugs from her teacher. There were no friends to see every day, there were no gymnastics classes, no dance practice. She couldn’t even go to the pool in her neighborhood due to fear of the virus. As an only child, her world had narrowed quickly and drastically.
