"Enter To Learn, Leave to Serve"

Class of 2025: share your email address with the school!

Merry Christmas In Service to Others!

Our Hawks partnered with NJ State Police Troop 'D' and the Troopers United Foundation to collect toys for children and families in need. Trooper Reinaldo Cruz was quick to thank the school administration, student-athletes from the baseball and basketball teams, and Peer Ministry led by Mr. Anthony Romano, for their generosity and service. But it is we who extend our thanks to Trooper Cruz and his organization for all the support they provide to many young Hawks in a variety of ways, including tuition assistance, and helping make our "Come to Learn, Leave to Serve" motto a reality.

HAWK ANGELS

Highlight

Year End Giving

The month of December is typically one of our strongest fundraising months, and this year proved no different. For the month, The Fund for Hudson Catholic received the generous support of 49 Hawks and Friends in gifts valuing $75,000+. This total brings the year to date total raised in The Fund to $193,000, which is 48% of our full year goal of $400,000, placing us squarely on target at the mid-year point to reach our goal. We highlight two recent, notable gifts.

Thomas Burke '73, in November, stepped up in a very meaningful way, coming to the aid of two Hawks who are experiencing extreme financial hardship at home, by producing a gift of $17,000 that satisfied their tuition obligations for the year, net of financial aid received to date. They now are unburdened to focus on their studies without worry that they might not be able to continue their attendance at The Hawks Nest. Tom nurtured a career in the casino/hotel industry that required extensive travel and ultimately landed him in Evergreen, CO where he and his wife Barbara now live. The fact that the Burkes have been loyal supporters of Hudson Catholic with equivalent gifs to the Student Emergency Fund in years past is living proof that Hawks may venture far and wide from the Nest, but their care and concern for Hudson Catholic travels with them and remains intact.

Gerry McGraw '72, in December, again rewarded the trust he holds for the Hudson Catholic mission, values, and ability to produce consistent, effective, and outsized results with his gifts and those of fellow donors. For the fifth time, he has gifted $50,000 or more to Hudson Catholic, with no strings attached, instructing us to use it as we see fit. Our needs are great, and this gift helps us advance our mission in various ways - tuition assistance, faculty retention, and support for the curriculum, the arts and athletics.

Being accountable to you regarding your performance on behalf of Hudson Catholic empowers us to continue voicing our rallying cry for The Fund: "We Need More Hawks" -- certainly like Gerry McGraw and Tom Burke -- but We Also Need More Hawks at all levels of financial capability to make Hudson Catholic work. Go Hawks!

Speaking of Angels,

The Student/Partner Alliance Leans In

This school year, to further address the burden of rising tuition costs, the Student/Partner Alliance has raised their scholarships from $3,000 to $3,500 per student per year. 35 Hawks are the fortunate recipients of these scholarships for the 2025-26 school year.

The 'S/PA' is Hudson Catholic's largest single benefactor, providing over $123,000 annually in tuition assistance scholarships to Hawk students as part of its support of five North Jersey Catholic high schools. Overall, the organization is able to provide such scholarships to 180 students from low-income families to attend college-prep high schools in their neighborhoods, augmenting that support with caring, professional mentors who guide the students throughout all four years of high school. S/PA also provides enrichment programs and events that prepare students for college and help them grow and connect, such as virtual workshops on financial literacy, college readiness, resume building, online branding, and through a partnership with AtomicMind, for high-achieving S/PA students, access to tutoring, test prep, and college acceptance services.

Our 'S/PA Kids' and Hudson Catholic are immensely grateful for our S/PA Sponsor, Partner, and Mentor Angels.

Our Faith On Display

How Catholic of him. Reverend Patrick Hyde, O.P., a Dominican Friar and Pastor at St. Paul Catholic Center in Bloomington, IN, was recently quoted as saying "We had a special visitor come by the parish before Christmas. He told us: 'This Church and you all are a major reason why this happened'. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Congratulations, Fernando and a Merry Christmas!" Fernando is, of course, Fernando Mendoza, the starting Quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner for the #1-ranked Indiana Hoosiers.

Gratitude is a Great Way to Live Every Day. This is Super Bowl-winning NFL Coach John Harbaugh just one day after being relieved of his duties as Head Coach of the Baltimore Ravens after an 18-year run.

Will you worship God only when He gives?

Message From The Prez

As we enter 2026, I need to say a big THANK YOU to all those who supported our incredible Hudson Catholic community throughout 2025. You have allowed us to continue our Lasallian mission while we provide a quality, Catholic, values-based education to our incredibly diverse student-body. As former Pope Francis wrote, "In the diversity of people who experience the gift of God, each in accordance with its own culture, the Church expresses her authentic Catholicity and shows forth the 'beauty of her varied face'." It is through the generosity and support of our stakeholders that we are able to provide that gift of God.

Your support becomes even more crucial in 2026 as our families face looming economic uncertainty. Our ability to keep our tuition affordable while, at the same time assist families when needed, is critical. At the same time, being able to hire excellent teachers and provide top-notch educational opportunities through our college programs, STEM programs, and Fine & Performing Arts; opportunities for spiritual growth; and the ability to offer high-level athletics and multiple extracurricular clubs are keys to our success. Our young men and women stand on the shoulders of our stakeholders. Thank you for being members of the Hawk family! Happy New Year!!

Hawk Happenings

Join Us In Prayer

President-Principal Terry Matthews invites all Hawks and Friends to join the Hudson Catholic Community in prayer, as we republish a letter sent to the families of Hudson Catholic on December 15th following the tragic violence at Brown University, not far away, and across the world at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia.

"Given the events of this past weekend - a shooting on the Brown University campus and a shooting that targeted Australia's Jewish community celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach - I ask that our Hawk family pray for the souls of those that were killed and injured, as well as for the souls of the perpetrators who were so lost that they were capable of such terrible acts. And I ask that we pray for an end to the gun violence that continues to plague our society. Events like this remind us that a faith-filled, values-based Catholic education steeped in love, compassion, and empathy is an incredibly important foundation for our young people who will always be the light in times of darkness. May God bless the souls of the departed and give strength to those left behind. St. John Baptist de La Salle......Pray for Us. Live Jesus in Our Hearts.......Forever."

Our Hawks Are Troopers!

The efforts of the Troopers United Foundation (who support several of our Hawks) led by State Trooper Reinaldo 'Rey' Cruz, to distribute 60 pallets of non-perishable food, household essentials, hams, and turkeys across ten counties in New Jersey were made possible through the collaboration of many dedicated partners like the JC, Elizabeth, and North Brunswick PDs, NJ State Troopers, Union County Sheriff's Office, and NJ Turnpike Authority. And, here, our Hawks among Student Council, Baseball, Basketball and Volleyball, played their part in the distribution -- being of service to others, which warmed the heart of St. John Baptist de La Salle.

"An Incredible Act of Love and Generosity"

Our winner of the Family Fundraising Raffle held on December 4th is Senior Jadyra Garcia, one of only two seniors in the Newark archdiocese who has earned an O'Toole Family Presidential Scholarship to Villanova University (awarded annually in partnership with the Scholarship Fund for Inner City Children), which will cover all of her expenses -- tuition, room and board, books -- for the next four years. Most people would have chosen the $5,000 cash prize at that point. Instead, in an incredible act of love and generosity, Jadyra gave the full-year tuition award to her sister, Genesis Garcia '29, a member of our freshman class. This marks the seventh year in a row that a Hawk student has been awarded free tuition.

A Footnote to the O'Toole Scholarship: nominees must be academically high-achieving scholars who demonstrate strong leadership skills and the potential for future development. Upon nomination, students are invited to complete a formal application and submit an essay. Finalists are invited to the Villanova campus for in-person interviews in April of their Junior year. Jadyra is a Hawk Space Camper and member of the SPU Dual Degree Program. We'd say it's been quite a year for the Garcia Family!

Boys Basketball Off and Running

in Kavon Stewart Era

Followin1975 Class Giving - Google Sheetsg the surprise departure of long-time Coach and Athletic Director, Nick Mariniello and the graduation of D1 players Omari Moore and Keith McKnight, President-Principal Terry Matthews turned to Hudson's own storied history and selected Kavon Stewart '13, who dished out plenty to Wall of Honor member Reggie Cameron '13, to guide our Hawks. His team promptly responded with a signature win on opening night, a 54-49 conquest of perennial powerhouse Patrick School National (formerly St. Patrick's of Elizabeth) at the Hawks Nest. Senior Elijah Williams and junior Noreaga James led the Hawks with 23 and 22 points, respectively, both career highs. The new year started off with a difficult schedule against state powerhouse Catholic opponents, with the Hawks bowing to St. Benedict's and Bergen Catholic, but rebounded with a 61-35 defeat of Lincoln, leaving the Hawks at 4-4 to date.

Help is on the way for the roster, in the form of four talented transfer students who, by rules, were required to sit out the first 30 days of the season. They made their presence felt last night in their season debut, a 78-31 victory at home against Hoboken. Junior Austin Graves poured in 32 points and sophomore Houston Shortell added 18.

Get set for Dickinson on Jan. 15th at home; St. Peter’s Prep on Jan. 20th away; College Achieve Asbury Park on Jan. 24th at home and, St. Joe's Metuchen on Jan. 30th away. The regular season concludes at home vs. Union City on Feb. 9th. Go Hawks!!

The Changing Neighborhood: Campus Edition

Before: The Mercer Street entrance since the beginning of time. Doors and frame are originals from 1964, causing our President to remark "We were heating Mercer Street." Utilizing $72,000 of security funds from a State grant, the doors have been replaced with updated Fiber Reinforced Plastic school opening security rated doors, and the original glass replaced with 1-inch FRP insulated glass and panels below. Door handles are built into the structure of the doors.

After: The renovated entrance provides added security. Cameras monitor visitor entry, which is made by swipe card for staff or remote access granted from the Main Office. Once inside, the process repeats, creating a secondary, secure "man-trap" that prevents unauthorized access to the school. The Lobby is now safer and, as a consequence, warmer, with a positive impact on energy bills.

Not All Who Wander Are Lost. Zanai Jones '21. In a deliberate journey of self-discovery and experience, former Hawk Basketball sensation and all-time leading Girls scorer, has joined the Female Harlem Globetrotters! That's a big deal! She joined the team on its European Tour.

Put her in Coach. Karen Ramiu '18 came back to The Nest this year and becomes the second woman of her class to return as an athletic team Head Coach, and the second alum, following Wall of Honor member Katria Stewart '15 to guide the Girls Volleyball Team. Her classmate, and Volleyball teammate, Jillian Ward '18 is the Head Coach of the Softball Team. Oh, and she also happens to be teaching Spanish at The Nest! About Karen Ramiu: In her playing days for the Hawks, Karen earned 1st Team All County and 2nd Team All State, and was a member of back-to-back County Championship and State Sectional Championship teams. Moving on to the collegiate level, she played for St. Peter's University where she won honors such as MAAC Freshman of the Year, and 1st Team All MAAC Conference. Three Hawks from those Championship teams went on to play together at St. Peter's University. In below photo: Alanis Alvarado '18 is top, 3rd from left; Andrea Lombeyda '18 is bottom, 3rd from left; and Karen Ramiu '18 is top, 3rd from right. We think this is a very cool photo worth finding an excuse to publish!

Footballer goes Bowling. Hasson Manning '23 made an appearance at the 68 Ventures Bowl on December 17th, as carried on ESPN, helping the Delaware Blue Hens to a 20-13 victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, AL. Will played collegiately at Barry University, St. Thomas University, Ramapo College, and NJCU, graduating in 2025 with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. He began his professional basketball career in 2024, signing his first international contract in Durango, Mexico. He later played in Lappeenranta, Finland, and most recently completed his third professional contract in Guasave, Mexico. He is currently awaiting updates from his agent regarding his next placement.

A Leader and a Shaker. John Zazzera '83, President, Chief Executive Officer and Board Director at First National Bank of Pasco in Dade City, FL, former CIO at GE Capital, and former member of the Supervisory Board of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, has been selected to serve as a private sector advisor in sessions aligned with the United States' 2025 G20 Presidency. A First Time for Everything. David Carbone '74 who has no children of his own, but counts 13 among those for whom he has served as an advocate, mentor, and life coach, is engaged to end his bachelorhood on March 28, 2026, to Ms. Leidy Paola of Columbia, S.A. Hearty Congratulations!

We don't need a reason to publish anything about Brian Altano '74. But we sure did like this photo.

Tell Us

Just one of many things that unites us as Hawks is that Hudson Catholic alumni spread around the nation and the world are making incredible contributions to their communities, professions, and to Hudson Catholic.

If you know of an exceptional Hawk deserving recognition, we invite you to share why, by writing to advancement@hudsoncatholic.org with examples of Hawk alumni and alumnae leadership, service, and achievement...........and occasional whimsy.

Hawk Gatherings

Nineties Noir. From Eduardo Pena '90: "Hudson Catholic was a special place for me. But even more special were the friends I made. A group of us decided to get together and, as it happens, this year marks our 35th anniversary. Regardless of title, life experiences and status in life, we all reverted back to our 18 year-old selves and went back in time to when life was simple. Great time seeing my Hawk Family." The Hawks of '90 are: Jimmy Nichols, Peter Doss, Jesse Ortiz, Mike Malloy, John Airey, Eduardo Pena, Mike Kilgallen, Jason Dembowski, Ernest Ceberio, Bernard Amato, and Joel Luzzi.

Hawks (at the Shore) of '80 gathered at Marandola's in Bradley Beach to do a 45-year dry-run for their soon-enough 50 year Reunion! They are: Steve Grocki, Ray Pipher, Bob Bonilla (not that one!), Ed Hickey, Hudson County Sports Hall of Famer Ken Such, Dan Cunning, and Paul Ebert.

Arguably, the longest running annual Hawk Gathering, this annual Christmas Dinner reunites '75 and '74 Hawks, with a '72 in there, and it only grows in size each year, proving that Hawks flock hard together.

Magical Hawk Track Season Occurred 10 Years Ago

Five Hawks Named All Americans

The Jersey Journal of June 25, 2015 blared the news that the Hawk Outdoor Track Team had reached a level of national prominence under Coach Gerry McCann '68, highlighted by five Hudson Hawks earning All American accolades for their landmark performances at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals held in Greensboro, North Carolina. The five Hawk All Americans included Freshman sensation Crystal Ortiz in the 2,000 Meter Steeplechase event, and the Boys 4x200 Sprint Medley Team of Sef Penson '16, Raevon Floyd-Bennett '15, Courtney Johnson '17, and George Mason-bound Evander Pierre '15.

Scene, or Seen, in a place called The Holy City: "There is no greater calling than to serve others"

Blasts From the Past

One last look-in to our 50-year anniversary celebration of that fabled Hawk team that brought home our first County Championship. Thanks for the memories! But where is Rocky? And whatever happened to Mr.. John Longworth?

Hawk band members of 'Uncle Eustace', along with various rogues, at one of the Hawk Dances, circa 1971: back row, L. to R.: Mike Kulik '73, Mike Topolski '72, Joe Colasurdo '72; bottom row, L., John Robinson '71, R., John Colaneri '71.

The December 30, 1969 'High School Set' published in The Jersey Journal contained the following passages and photos: STUDENT FOCUS: In his freshman year, Wayne Witkowski '71, after a hard campaign, was elected class president. Since then, he has moved on to become sports editor of the school newspaper and statistician for the football team. He hopes to repeat this honor for basketball. A former member of the Forensics League, he also is active with the Booster Club. Wayne is a good friend to all, a good student, and an all-around "good guy." FROSH SPOTLIGHT: George Polasky, Class of '73, is the main topic of conversation among the freshmen classes. His six points ending the triple [overtime] victory against Snyder High School has won him the fame and glory of his fellow students. FACULTY FOCUS: Brother Patrick, "a man for all students;" a dedicated religious and teacher; ever mindful of the needs of others; humble in manner, kind in spirit; willing, ready and happy to assist; a friend, a pal, a teacher; a man. Thanks, Brother, for being who you are. Editor's Note: Some things never changed.

Planning Ahead

Looking Ahead:

One Big Beautiful Tax Deduction

Good News for Our Donors Who Do Not Itemize

In 2025, donations are only tax-deductible if you itemize on your tax return. But federal legislation enacted in July allows for a new tax deduction starting in 2026, centered on charitable gifts. Even if you do not itemize on your tax returns, therefore take the standard deduction, you will be able to take an additional deduction beyond the standard deduction, for charitable donations up to $1,000 individually, or $2,000 for married couples. Something to keep in mind through 2026 as you plan your charitable gifts. Pssst.........Hudson Catholic.

Caring For Your Estate

Unlike a drivers license or a debit card, your estate planning documents do not have an expiration date. So, when should you update them?

The next time you review your estate plan, update your will if you have moved to a different state, changed your marital status, or brought a new child into your family.

It is time to change your financial or healthcare power of attorney if your relationship with your chosen person has changed, or that person has passed away. And look to change your advance directive or living will after a diagnosis of a significant health issue or hospitalization.

When you do, you’ll thank The Hawk!

How Would You Like to Be Remembered at Hudson Catholic?

You Can Endow Perpetual Giving

to The Home of The Hawks

You believe in the Lasallian mission of Hudson Catholic. And you have made gifts to benefit our Hawks for many years now. And although life on earth is finite, your giving can outlive you.

A Family Endowment Fund will continue to make gifts for you even when you begin your journey home to Heaven. A Family Endowment Fund is a permanent charitable fund that endows your current monthly, quarterly, or annual giving and provides ongoing financial support to your favorite Catholic cause after your passing.

You can start your fund now with cash, securities, or IRA distributions, generate immediate and longer-term personal tax benefits, and define how your fund is distributed. Or, it can be initiated later, upon your passing, by the advance designation of Hudson Catholic as a beneficiary of a will, life insurance policy, investment account, or donor advised fund; or, via memorial gifts included in an obituary.

If you would like to explore this further, or learn of more details, contact the Chief Advancement Officer, Gary Ferrari at 201-888-6276 or gary.ferrari@hudsoncatholic.org.

Did You Know?

......there are four State Champion athletic teams in school history? The first was the 1976 Basketball Parochial Group 'A' Champs. Twenty four years later, the 2000 Ice Hockey Parochial Group 'A' Champs. And fourteen years following that, 2014 Baseball became the Non-Public Group 'B' Champs, and the following year, the Boys Track Team captured the 2015 New Jersey Catholic Conference Group 'B' Indoor Championship. Hockey went beyond that title to capture the State Tournament of Champions title.

Eleven times we finished a season as North Jersey, or State Sectional, Champs, beginning with the first title of any kind, captured by the 1973 Hawk Basketball team in Parochial Group 'A', before bowing out in the State title game to CBA. Our North Jersey Championship teams include Soccer in 1983, 2000, and 2016; Bowling and Baseball in the spring of 2008, and Football in the fall of that year; Girls Volleyball in 2016 and 2017; Boys Basketball in 2017, conquering and retiring St. Anthony's for that title before bowing to The Patrick School; and, Boys Volleyball just this past year, 2025.
