A New Chapter Takes Shape in Dulles, Virginia

The Washington Post press is no longer a build. It is a machine being timed, webbed, and test run.

Over the past two weeks, the 28-unit Goss Urbanite in Dulles, Virginia, has moved from setup into active commissioning. Testing of final electrical work is being completed, along with the DCOS camera systems, Smith spray bars, and Perretta remote inking.

imPRESSions mechanical lead Mike Stallings and electrical lead Armando Garcia, working alongside The Washington Post crew, have brought all 28 units through lubrication, inspection, and mechanical test runs. Centerline testing and print testing are now underway.

On the water side, the Smith system is energized and communicating. Tank wiring and RS485 cabling are in place, and both supply pumps have been tested. Remaining work is concentrated on chiller, RO, and spray-bars.

Operator training has moved in step with the mechanical work. Washington Post Press Operators have been trained on roller settings, ink-fountain calibration, and registration. DCOS registration cameras are installed and focused on all web leads, and cutoff-camera placement at Folders 1 and 2 has been confirmed.

We are close to the green light for all systems go, with live printing targeted in the upcoming months. Senior press expert Mike Stallings and Armando Garcia are putting the press through its paces and fine-tuning every system.
