Reflecting on a Full & Meaningful June

June was a month of connection, celebration, and momentum at Ledbetter Cowan Law Group. I’m proud of the way our entire team continues to show up—not only for our clients, but for our community.

We kicked off the month with a heartfelt celebration: on June 6th, we honored Kathy Shanley’s retirement after 9 incredible years helping build this firm from the ground up. Surrounded by her family, friends, and co-workers at Evie’s at Spanish Point, we toasted the woman who has been an anchor behind the scenes—bringing dedication, grace, and warmth to everything she did.

Mid-month, we hosted a powerful Lunch & Learn with Venice Estate Sales & Gallery on how estate sale professionals can support real estate agents and families during home transitions.

I also had the opportunity to lead a virtual Deed Workshop, breaking down the different types of property transfers—Trusts, Powers of Attorney, LLCs—and common pitfalls to avoid.

Later in June, Jada Terreros, Esq. joined David Rouse of Trustco Bank for a well-attended Estate Planning Seminar at their Venice branch. From Wills and Trusts to Homestead and Advance Directives, the evening gave guests the clarity they needed to take the next step—and Carrabba’s Italian spread didn’t hurt either.

And because fun is part of our culture too—Bingo Night at the Venice Area Board of Realtors was a hit! We were proud to sponsor an evening full of bold daubs and big laughs.

We ended the month with a full slate of real estate closings that reminded us of our mission: helping people through life’s big moments with confidence and care. Whether you're buying a home, settling a loved one’s estate, or planning your own legacy—we’re here to guide you through it.

Here’s to a strong summer ahead, and to the community that makes our work so meaningful.

Warmly,

Steven W. Ledbetter, Esq.

Elder Care Is Getting Pricier—Here’s How You Can Stay in Control

Elder care is no longer a distant worry—it’s an urgent, growing challenge for millions of families. With the cost of in-home care now reaching $18,000 a month in some areas, families are often caught off guard, emotionally and financially, when a loved one suddenly needs daily assistance. Add in the complexity of Medicaid rules, insurance gaps, and caregiver burnout, and it’s easy to see why elder care planning is becoming one of the most important conversations families can have.

At Ledbetter Cowan Law Group, we believe peace of mind shouldn’t be a luxury. Our team helps families prepare for the what-ifs of aging with personalized estate plans, asset protection strategies, and long-term care guidance. Whether your parents are still healthy or already facing medical needs, proactive legal planning can make the difference between crisis and clarity.

Without the right documents in place—like powers of attorney, advance directives, and trust-based plans—families risk court intervention, delayed decision-making, and the loss of hard-earned savings to unexpected nursing home costs. We’ve seen firsthand how a well-prepared family navigates elder care with less stress, more control, and dignity intact.

The good news? It’s never too early to start. And you don’t have to do it alone. Ledbetter Cowan Law Group's compassionate attorneys work side by side with you to protect your family’s future, offering clear advice and solutions tailored to your unique situation.

If you’re ready to take the first step—or if you’re already facing decisions about elder care—we’re here to help. Schedule a consultation today, and let’s make sure your loved ones are cared for, protected, and supported—every step of the way.

An Evening of Estate Planning at Trustco Bank

It was a full house at Trustco Bank’s Venice Branch for an informative evening with Jada W. Terreros, Esq. of Ledbetter Cowan Law Group and David Rouse of Trustco Bank. Guests learned the essentials of Estate Planning—from Wills and Trusts to Homestead and Advance Directives—with clear, practical guidance to help them plan for the future. 🍝 Thanks to Carrabba’s for the great food—and congrats to our raffle winner! We’re grateful to everyone who joined us to make smart plans for a secure tomorrow.

JUNE REAL ESTATE CLOSINGS:

Smooth Deals, Happy Clients

June brought the heat—and a wave of real estate closings at Ledbetter Cowan Law Group!

From quick cash deals to complex contingencies, our team tackled each transaction with diligence and attention to detail. We’re proud to support buyers, sellers, and agents with a closing experience that’s smooth, secure, and stress-free.

BEYOND THE CLUTTER:

What Should Stay, Sell, or Go?

June Lunch & Learn Recap

This month’s Lunch & Learn was anything but boring! Real estate agents got the inside scoop on how partnering with estate sale pros can transform “too much stuff” into a smooth path to closing. Big thanks to Dan and Debbie for showing us how the right support team can turn chaos into commission—and make the process a lot more fun along the way. Venice Estate Sales

July 16th Lunch & Learn: Insurance Relief Is Here—Let’s Unlock More Closings Presented by Joyner Family Insurance July 16 | 12–1 PM | Venice Area Board of Realtors

The Florida insurance market is shifting—in a good way. Rates are stabilizing, new carriers are entering the market, and informed agents are turning that momentum into more successful closings.

Join us for our July Lunch & Learn, where Joyner Family Insurance will unpack key updates in both home and flood insurance—including coverage options for primary, seasonal, and rental homes, the true definition of a flood, inspection requirements, and how to help clients navigate post-storm recovery.

If you’re working with buyers or sellers this season, this session will help you close with confidence. Lunch is on us—bring your questions!

Avoid the Party You Don’t Want an Invite To

If you saw this tongue-in-cheek Facebook “invitation” to probate court—complete with party vibes and zero enthusiasm—you already know we like to have a little fun while sharing an important truth: probate is not the party you want to attend.

Probate is the legal process that takes place after someone passes away, and while it serves a necessary purpose, it can be lengthy, costly, and stressful for the people you love. Fortunately, it’s also something you can usually avoid with proper Estate Planning.

That’s where we come in. Our team helps clients create Wills, Trusts, and other essential documents designed to:

  • Keep your family out of court
  • Ensure your wishes are honored
  • Protect your assets with clarity and care

So if your current plan is outdated—or you’ve been meaning to get around to it—consider this your (gentle but humorous) reminder. Give us a call to keep your family out of probate court and off the unwanted guest list.

Red Shoes & Real Confidence

We’re proud to support this incredible organization and their mission to uplift foster children—one outfit, one smile, one pair of red sneakers at a time.

Join us in supporting their mission this summer: thetwigcares.com

“Do you have shoes that will make me run faster?”

We love this sweet moment shared by The Twig’s founder, Dianne Weed—who also happens to be the mother of our partner, Callie W. Cowan, Esq.

“I found red sneakers and told him they’d make him run faster and jump higher. He tested his old shoes first—then the new ones. The difference was amazing. His excitement for his newfound superpower reminded me how much a little bit of belief in our abilities can make all the difference.”

At The Twig, it’s never just about clothes. It’s about dignity, confidence, and the kind of joy that sticks with a child long after they leave the boutique.

Congratulations to Steven W. Ledbetter, Esq.!

Big news! Steve has been named a 2025 SRQ ELITE Top Attorney, recognized by his peers for his professional reputation, excellence, integrity, and leadership in the legal field. Those who know and work with Steve also recognize his entrepreneurial spirit, dedication to helping others, and strong ties to the local community—whether through legal work, business growth, or support of local organizations.

CELBRATING KATHY SHANLEY Honoring Kathy’s Retirement: Nine Years of Heart and Hustle

On June 6th, we had the joy of honoring someone very special to the Ledbetter Cowan Law Group family—Kathy Shanley. After nine incredible years of dedication, leadership, and behind-the-scenes magic, Kathy is officially retiring. And we couldn't let her go without a proper send-off!

The celebration took place at Evie’s at Spanish Point, where friends, family, and co-workers gathered to toast the woman who helped build the very foundation of our firm. From day one, Kathy wasn’t just an employee—she was a partner in vision, a trusted confidante, and a calming presence during even the busiest seasons. Her role evolved alongside the firm’s growth, but one thing never changed: her steady leadership and unmatched loyalty.

Throughout her time with us, Kathy wore many hats—HR expert, systems thinker, problem solver, and sometimes the unofficial office therapist. She helped Steve develop the structure that would allow Ledbetter Cowan Law Group to thrive and remain people-focused, even as we grew. Her insight and care helped shape the culture we’re so proud of today.

At the party, laughter flowed as freely as the drinks, and there were more than a few happy tears. Stories were shared, hugs exchanged, and we were all reminded of the powerful impact one person can make on a team—and on so many lives.

Kathy, we’re grateful beyond words. Thank you for your years of service, your unwavering support, and your friendship. You’ve left a lasting legacy, and while we’ll miss you at the office, we’re cheering you on in this exciting new chapter.

Enjoy every minute—you’ve earned it.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Heather Zbytniewski

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Heather Zbytniewski, a standout in our Probate department whose sharp instincts, fierce work ethic, and quick wit make her a force to be reckoned with. Whether she’s managing the fine print in a probate file or navigating the twists of a real estate transaction, Heather is the one you can count on to get it done—and done right. As we like to say around here, “If there’s a will, there’s a way—and Heather will make it happen.”

Since joining Ledbetter Cowan Law Group, Heather has taught herself two departments from the ground up, mastering both with the kind of confidence and competence that makes it all look easy. Outside of the office, she’s happiest soaking up sunshine on her pontoon boat with her dogs, Roxy and Rooney, and blasting country music. Her go-to karaoke jam? “Margaritaville,” of course.

Originally from Utica, New York, Heather will proudly introduce anyone to her hometown’s signature dish—Chicken Riggies. And while she’s got a bold personality and a famously low tolerance for nonsense (her words, not ours), she’s also full of heart and humor. Her spirit celeb is Sandra Bullock—if Sandra traded red carpets for salt air and boat days. One day, Heather dreams of opening a cozy coastal market filled with beachy vibes, fresh finds, and local flavor. Knowing Heather, we wouldn’t be surprised if that dream’s already mapped out and underway.

We’re lucky to have Heather on our team. Her determination, creativity, and can-do spirit make Ledbetter Cowan Law Group a better—and much more fun—place to be.

JUNE BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS!

Happy Birthday Oksana & Valerie!

There’s a Reason We Don’t Use Squirrels

If you’ve seen ducks waddling through our marketing, that’s no accident. We chose ducks for a reason—and it’s not just because they look great in sunglasses.

We help people get organized. Whether it’s Estate Planning, Probate, or Real Estate Law, our goal is to bring calm, clarity, and confidence to what can often feel like a chaotic process.

Ducks move with quiet purpose. Squirrels? Not so much. Squirrels dart. Panic. Forget where they put things. Ducks glide in a row—just like we want your planning process to feel. That’s why our ducks aren’t just a theme—they’re honorary members of the Ledbetter Cowan Law Group team.

So when you see a duck in our emails, posts, events, or giveaway items, it’s our reminder (and yours) that with the right team, your future doesn’t have to feel frantic.

Let’s line things up—without the squirrel chaos.

Can You Spare a Square?

No toilet paper jokes here—okay, maybe just one. If that phrase rings a bell, you're likely thinking of the iconic Seinfeld episode where Elaine, stuck in a public restroom without TP, pleads for help: “Can you spare a square?” Spoiler alert—no square was spared.

Luckily, when it comes to QR codes, we’ve got plenty to go around.

So What Is a QR Code Anyway?

QR stands for Quick Response—a type of two-dimensional barcode that can hold hundreds of times more information than a traditional UPC code. Invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara for the Japanese auto industry, QR codes were created to track parts on factory floors with speed and accuracy.

They Could’ve Patented It— But They Didn’t.

The company that invented it, Denso Wave, chose not to enforce its patent. That meant the QR code could be used freely—no royalties, no licensing fees. And that decision made it one of the most widely adopted digital tools in the world today.

What Does It Do?

Just open your smartphone camera and point. It instantly decodes the square and takes you to a webpage, contact form, video, or event registration—no typing required.

Why We Use It:

At Ledbetter Cowan Law Group, our QR codes link you to things that matter:

  • Schedule a Will or Trust review
  • Refer a friend with one quick scan
  • RSVP to workshops or events
  • Access helpful estate planning resources

So yes, we can definitely spare a square—and we promise it’s not just another tech gimmick. It’s a simple way to help you get your ducks in a row.

Want to Scan a QR Code?

Good news—most smartphones already have a built-in QR scanner in the camera app. Just open your camera, point it at the QR code, and a link will pop up on your screen. No pop-up? You can download a free QR scanner app like:

  • QR Code Reader by Scan (iPhone & Android)
  • NeoReader QR & Barcode Scanner
  • QR Scanner – Barcode Reader

Just search in your phone’s App Store or Google Play Store.

Want to Make Your Own QR Code?

It’s free and easy! Try one of these sites to generate a QR code for a website, PDF, business card, or event link:

Just paste your link, hit generate, and download your code. That’s it—no tech wizardry required.Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?

Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
