MFGA eBulletin - November 2025

2025 MFGA Regenerative Ag Conference

Credit: Jenny Klassen

From the Desk of the Executive Director

Historically, I always plan to use my editorial space in our November MFGA ebulletin as a thanks and recap for our annual conference, taking a deep breath and setting the stage for a winding down period into December and soon into that special time of year where Christmas, family and friends are front and center.

But 2025 wasn’t an ordinary conference for MFGA. I’m still dazzled by several great things that happened over our two-day celebration in Brandon November 12-13, 2025.

The first - and by far - most important thing was your attendance and support.

You attended our event, perhaps, even in droves we’ve never seen before.

There’s nothing more a conference committee wants to see than venue staff throwing down a whole row of tables and chairs to seat the additional delegates. We are still getting a handle on final tallies and numbers, but early signals are 2025 was an all-time high attendance.

Of course, once you got to the conference, our sold-out trade show was there waiting for you. A busy, bustling room full of experts on products, programs and services for delegates to access and talk about. Those two groups connecting and doing business absolutely powered our conference vibe between keynotes and panels.

On the stage, we brought in well know USA speaker Rick Clark and surrounded him with four awesome Western Canadian keynotes: Michael Ferguson, Rob Wunder, Kimberly Cornish and Tom Krawiec. We brought back the Chuiko’s, John and Deanne, to give a Year Two update on their Vence virtual grazing project. We handed the microphone to our partners at Manitoba Association of Watersheds to update on their programs and at Regeneration Canada, as their provincial lead Kristelle Harper launched the Manitoba Regenerative Dairy Programto conference attendees.

We – of course - crowed about MFGA on MFGA Night, we have had such a great year with great things ahead. We inducted our well-respected chair Mike Duguid into the MFGA Wall of Fame as he has termed off our board and we also tapped into the strengths of Holistic Management Canada’s Bluesette Campbell and Dana Penrice to moderate three stellar panels around the Farm Gate, Dinner Plate and Global Weight of Regen Ag at our first ever MFGA Regen Ag Summit Night. And they crushed it. Hearty thanks to panelists Arron Nerbas, Zack Koscielny, Michelle Schram, Stuart Chutter, Mark Schram, Dr. Jayden Dobson, Rick Clark, Shelley Seed and Kevin

Elmy. It wasn’t an easy assignment, but you all made it so fabulous with common sense, provocative and experiential dialogue that resonated smartly. Thank you.

And last, but certainly not least, we were graced by the presence of Hon. Ron Kostyshyn, Manitoba Agriculture Minister, who welcomed delegates and used our event to launch a pilot project at MASC around perennials, marginal lands and a discount on forage insurance in front of our entire conference as well as John Plohman, the chair of MASC Board and several of the MASC board directors who were sitting in the audience and were singled out for their leadership.

We script every agenda heading into each conference, but we honestly couldn’t script this kind of wonderful stuff if we tried.

For sure, we know that there are things we can do better, will do better, want to do better and might never do again. There always is. That’s the beauty of adaptive management, right? Plan the work, work the plan, adapt, repeat. That’s also the significance of your feedback, so please do share your thoughts in our feedback gathering process underway via email and below.

But eight conferences later, this event hosted by a small farmer led group interested in learning more about regenerative agriculture has evolved into something that none of us could ever imagined at the time.

At its core, the MFGA Regenerative Agriculture Conference is a farmer led event for farmers and those that want to support and work with the innovative pod of farmers who come to our event.

And that is something super cool.

For that, MFGA graciously thanks every single one of you. We are truly humbled by your support.

Muchos Grasses ALL,

Duncan Morrison, MFGA Executive Director

MFGA Wall of Fame 2025 Inductee Mike Duguid accepts his MFGA executive plaque from interim chair Zack Koscielny at MFGA 2025 Regen Ag Conference as MFGA executive director Duncan Morrison looks on.

Duguid to MFGA Wall of Fame; Koscielny to chair

Mike Duguid has indeed done well for Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association (MFGA). And, as the longtime MFGA board member terms off the MFGA Board, MFGA has inducted Duguid into the MFGA Wall of Fame at the 2025 MFGA Regen Ag Conference in Brandon this week.

Duguid passes the chair’s gavel onto Zack Koscielny, current MFGA vice chair and interim chair from Strathclair, MB, until the MFGA board gathers again in January 2026 for Zack’s official acceptance. MFGA will retain Mike’s experience and insights as he has agreed to serve as volunteer past chair on as-needed basis in 2026.

Governments of Canada and Manitoba Launch Pilot to Reward Sustainable Farming: Farmers Can Save on Crop Insurance by Planting Perennial Forages: Ministers

The governments of Canada and Manitoba are introducing a new program that helps farmers adopt sustainable practices and save money. Federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath MacDonald and Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced the Forage Advantage pilot.

Starting in the 2026 crop year, Manitoba farmers who plant perennial forage crops on marginal land will receive a 15 per cent discount on Forage Establishment Insurance (FEI) premiums. Once the forage is in production the following year, farmers can also qualify for discounts on Basic or Select Hay Insurance or Forage Seed Insurance through the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC) AgriInsurance program. These programs protect against yield losses caused by natural hazards like drought, excess moisture and disease.

Planting forage on marginal land benefits both farmers and the environment. It improves soil fertility, enhances water filtration, increases carbon sequestration and reduces weeds and disease. Forage crops also support pollinators and biodiversity, while helping farms become more resilient to climate change.

The pilot applies to land classified as marginal, meaning areas that struggle to produce annual crops due to issues like poor soil, salinity, erosion or excess moisture. Farmers who choose FEI and plant forage on these acres will automatically receive the premium discount.

“The Forage Advantage pilot supports the Manitoba government’s mandate to foster innovation and research in the agricultural sector, including opportunities to expand regenerative agriculture,” said Minster Kostyshyn. “By encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices, this program helps farmers protect their land while maintaining productive and resilient operations.” More info: https://www.masc.mb.ca/masc.nsf/index.html

New Regenerative Dairy Program Launches in Manitoba

Regeneration Canada and the Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association (MFGA) have launched the Manitoba Regenerative Dairy Program, a farmer-centred initiative supporting dairy farmers in building on-farm resilience through regenerative practices.

Rooted in collaboration, this program recognizes that a regenerative food system starts with farmers. Initially, it brings together five core dairy farmers through the first regional Hub, who are applying regenerative principles suited to their unique contexts. Together, they will measure on-farm outcomes, refine approaches, and identify practical solutions that improve their environmental impact and business performance.

Manitoba’s Agricultural Crown Lands (ACL) Program and the ongoing public engagement process.

Manitoba Agriculture recognizes the important role commodity and producer groups have in growing Manitoba’s agriculture sector. Department staff are always happy to meet with your organization to discuss any proposed changes, suggestions, or concerns you may have.

In addition, in October, Manitoba extended the rent freeze for forage leases through the 2026 growing season, keeping rates at $3.66 per AUM. Alongside the rent freeze, we want to highlight some smaller changes recently made to the Agricultural Crown Lands Leases and Permits Regulation to address minor operational issues.

• The director now has the ability to reduce rent (AUMs) for government approved changes to land-use that negatively affect forage capacity. For example, changes as a result of quarries or other resource extraction.

• Leaseholders surrendering leases can request more time to remove improvements when extenuating circumstances make removal difficult in the allotted time.

• The temporary exception allowing subletting with a nomination application has been extended until December 31, 2026, giving clients an additional amnesty period to apply for a nomination certificate without penalty.

The EngageMB survey has been extended to December 15 https://engagemb.ca/ag-crown-lands to encourage broader participation and input.
