Sheriff Smith Goes to Washington . . .
. . . along with Sheriff Spike and Several Other Sheriffs
Two long-serving Sheriffs were invited to attend the U.S. President’s State of the Union Address on February 7. Members of Congress are permitted to invite one guest for the Address, and two New York State Congressional Representatives reached out to County law enforcement leaders.

Sheriff Jeff Smith was chosen to accompany Congresswoman Elise Stefanik. “I am honored and excited to attend this year’s State of the Union address in Washington, D.C. as Congresswoman Stefanik’s guest,” stated Sheriff Smith.

Sheriff Smith has served as Montgomery County Sheriff since 2019. He has been in law enforcement for 34 years, 12 of which he served as Undersheriff.

An Honored Guest at a Time-honored Event – Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike (left) with Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (right), who invited Sheriff Spike to attend the State of the Union address as her guest.

“I was surprised yet so honored to get the call from Congresswoman Claudia Tenney’s office to be her guest at the State of the Union . . .,” Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike noted via email. “I am humbled by the opportunity to be actually present and witness such an event that is part of this country’s heritage. I sincerely thank her for recognizing a Sheriff in this matter.”

Sheriff Spike announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election in the fall and will retire after 52 years in law enforcement. He was first elected Yates County Sheriff in 1992.

Congresswoman Tenney called Sheriff Spike “an exemplary law enforcement officer and dedicated public servant.”

Fulton County Sheriff Seeks Third Term
Forging Ahead – Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino (pictured above) plans to continue his law enforcement leadership role by winning and serving a third term.

Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino has announced he will seek reelection this year for a third term.

Sheriff Giardino first ran for countywide office in 1991. He is the only person in New York State history to have served as a County District Attorney, County Judge and County Sheriff, having won eight consecutive countywide elections.

Sheriff Giardino has been a media guest at several Fox Broadcasting Company programs, appearing on Fox News two dozen times, including the Tucker Carlson show and “The Ingraham Angle” hosted by Laura Ingraham, as well appearances on CNN, ABC’s “Good Morning America” and conservative radio host Glenn Beck’s show. His most recent appearance was earlier this year on a Fox Weather segment, providing tips to snowmobilers for avoiding accidents and injury.

Washington, D.C. was also the destination for several other New York Sheriffs — the National Sheriffs’ Association Annual Winter Conference.

Eight Sheriffs, along with New York State Sheriffs’ Association staff, attended plenary sessions, sat in on presentations highlighting ways to enhance law enforcement practices and led committee meetings. They also looked over the latest and greatest in products and services from vendors exhibiting at the conference.

Dealer Alert!
Below is an alert issued by the Oneida City Police Department. Sheriff’s Offices may want to circulate this alert throughout their counties, too.
We have received reports that highly addictive substances will soon be circulating in our area. These substances go by names like “Thin Mints,” “Samoas,” “Tag A Longs,” and “Lemon Ups.”

These substances are distributed by strong, smart, fearless young women who will lure you in with their good-cause story and get you hooked. Many people start with just one box, but one turns into two, two turns into five, and the next thing you know, you're hiding your stash in your freezer.

We want the community to know that we are here for you. We have set up a drop-off location for these “Girl Scout Cookies” at our Office, where our officers can dispose of them safely.

Editor Nota Bene [Editor’s Note] — While listing the previous winners of the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute Grover Cleveland Award in the February 3rd edition of File 25, we omitted the name of the 2022 winner, former Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois (pictured). We regret the error.
