Psalm 54:1–7

John 2:1–25

Joshua 19:1–21:19

Save me, O God, by your name; vindicate me by your might. Hear my prayer, O God; listen to the words of my mouth.

Arrogant foes are attacking me; ruthless people are trying to kill me—people without regard for God. Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me. (Psalms 54:1-3)

In 1914, a lighthouse keeper off the coast of Wales reportedly kept his light burning through a violent storm by hand—because the mechanism had failed. All night long, he turned the gears himself. Why? Because somewhere out in the darkness, someone needed saving.

David knew that kind of urgency.

In Psalm 54, he isn’t writing from a quiet hillside with a harp in hand—he’s running for his life. Betrayed by the Ziphites, hunted by King Saul, surrounded by enemies who “have no regard for God,” David cries out not with polished poetry, but raw desperation: “Save me, O God…hear my prayer.”

There’s no pretending here. No “I’ve got this.” Just honest dependence.

We like control. We like solutions. But there are moments when the gears break—when no strategy, no strength, no resource can fix what’s coming against us. And in that moment, we face a choice: panic…or pray.

David chooses prayer.

Notice what he leans on: not his reputation, not his past victories—but God’s name and God’s might. “Surely God is my help…He is the one who sustains me.” That’s not wishful thinking. That’s anchored confidence.

The storm may rage. The enemies may close in. But the light still shines—because God Himself is turning the gears.

And He never tires.

Lord, when I feel surrounded and overwhelmed, remind me that You are my help, my strength, and the One who sustains me—save me by Your name.
