Middle School Students Debate Climate Change at Kennedy Institute
On January 23, 2024, eighth-grade students visited the Kennedy Institute, where they were immersed in a Senate Simulation focused on climate change. Although the legislation they developed did not pass, they collaborated, debated, and experienced the role of senators. This visit allowed the students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in a unique environment.

|
The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate is dedicated to educating the public about the important role the Senate plays in our government, encouraging active democracy, launching civil discourse, and inspiring the next generation of citizens and leaders to engage in the civic life of their communities. The Institute is located on Columbia Point at the University of Massachusetts.
WBMSHS would like to thank the teacher chaperones, employees at the institute, and the Howard Trustees for awarding money to help offset most of the transportation fees so that our students could participate in this unique experience.

Howard High School Football Team
|
"The first official season of the football team under the new coach, Mr. Vincent Gori, was very successful, considering that the boys had never played organized football. The team ended their abbreviated season with two wins and two losses."
"The team should attribute their success to the fine teamwork, spirit and cooperation among the boys during practices and in the games. The fact that they had a fine coach to teach them their duties was perhaps the most important factor for a first-year team."
~Excerpts from The Climber, 1946 Howard High School Yearbook

Climate Can Do: Updating Massachusetts' Bottle Bill for a Greener Future
In 1983, Massachusetts launched the Bottle Bill, encouraging recycling with a $0.05 deposit on soda and beer containers. It worked well, cutting litter and boosting aluminum, plastic, and glass recycling. But times have changed, and this old bottle bill needs a modern makeover.
Two new bills are now before the Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy and aim to refresh the Massachusetts Bottle Bill, addressing the challenges posed by today's beverage consumption habits and recycling issues.
The Proposed Expansion
Bill H.3676: An Act to Update the Bottle Bill. This bill seeks to modernize the Bottle Bill to meet current needs.
Bill H.3690/SB2104: An Act to Expand the Bottle Bill. This bill aims to broaden the Bottle Bill's coverage to include any drinkable liquid intended for human consumption.
Expanding the Bottle Bill aligns with today's beverage choices. The original law covered soft drinks, mineral water, beer, and malt beverages. Today's options have created a gap that has led to more litter and waste.
Updating the definition of "beverages" in the Bottle Bill removes this confusion. It's simple: water, flavored waters, iced teas, coffee-based drinks, and sports drinks should now have a $0.05 deposit. This expansion is expected to generate about $20 million in new revenue, with $5 million going to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA). EEA will use these funds for various initiatives, such as municipal recycling incentives, recycling transfer stations, source reduction, and public education.
How To Support The Bottle Bill Expansion
Your actions can help Massachusetts move towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. Join the movement and be part of positive change!
This Climate Can-Do Article was written by Jamie Puhi, and focuses on actions we can do to live more sustainably. We can do it!

Friends of the Library
Have you heard of Friends of the West Bridgewater Public Library (FOL)? This is a non-profit 501(c) volunteer organization that has helped support library programs and services since 1983.
The Friends have sponsored the Reading is Fundamental program (RIF) for over 30 years. Students in grades K through 5 get to pick out a free book each distribution. The Friends also has helped support the public library’s summer reading programs. Their aim is to encourage the children of our town to read. A yearly scholarship has been established for a high school graduate to further their education.
Over the years this group has helped provide outdoor handicapped accessible picnic tables and the Ultimate 2+3D printer. They have purchased passes for the Museum Pass Program. This gives discounted or free admission to various local museums. A Beatles Multi-Media Program and Glider presentation were funded to attract multi generations in 2023.
How is the Friends of the West Bridgewater Public Library able to do so much and how can you help them continue? Visit their ongoing book sale where your donations help fund the RIF program. Please consider becoming a member. Annual membership dues vary by level from “Friend” to “Corporate Friend”. All contributions are tax-deductible and you can pick up a membership form at the circulation desk at the library. Meetings are held monthly and posted on the library web site.
Make it a New Year’s resolution to give back to the community by joining the Friends of the Library!
To get involved, Membership forms are available at the Circulation Desk of the library.

Dress-A-Girl Celebrates Monumental 2023
This year, Dress-A-Girl Around the World of Bridgewater and West Bridgewater had an exciting year, with many new members and volunteers. Together, they delivered and shipped over 3,500 dresses to little girls in over a dozen countries around the world, with 1,255 of these dresses being sent to Operation Christmas Child.
They continue to hold workshops at the Bridgewater Senior Center, The West Bridgewater Library and other locations, and even work with several Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups in the area. In 2023, they were highlighted on Channel 5 news on their 5 For Good segment, bringing in many new members. New 'sewists' are always welcome, and if you don't sew, have no fear! You can donate fabrics, trims, make straps and pockets, clean and iron the fabric, and of course donate much needed dollars.
Congratulations to all that you do, and here's looking to make even more impact in 2024!

Hot Chocolate warms the heart... share some with a friend
... or someone you want to be a friend.
Chocolate's healing properties are well known. The darker, the better. Warmed and rich. And when I am mindful of the source, I can enjoy knowing it isn't at the expense of children, farmers or our planet.
"All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt." ~ Charles M. Schulz
"You just need a little perspective. Warmed chocolate can give you that.” ~Giada De Laurentiis
"Research tells us fourteen out of any ten individuals likes chocolate." ~ Sandra Boynton
“Because the best gift in life, is just having someone to drink hot chocolate with.”
~Tessa Shaffer, Heaven Has No Regrets
|
My solution for dreary days ~ a snuggle with a good book and hot chocolate!
To check on your source: ask at your local chocolatier for Fair Trade Chocolate. Equal Exchange in WB has cocoa mix.
Enjoy ~ Jacquie
