News & Events

We are thrilled to welcome Bishop Anne Hodges-Copple at our 10 a.m. service for baptisms, confirmations and receptions. Bishop José, of course is away on sabbatical. Bishop Anne's continuing obligations serving on the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church regretfully will require her to depart immediately after the 10 a.m. Eucharist. So please join us to greet Bishop Anne at 9 a.m. in the Trinity Room and hear from her!

This coming week, St. James welcomes a new ministry partner in the school, Helping Hand, a unique local nonprofit that serves special needs children in our county. While Helping Hand is technically a tenant, their mission—to provide quality developmental services with a unique commitment to serve those who are physically, emotionally, and educationally challenged so that they may realize their potential—reflects also St. James' own gospel mission—to love all, serve all, and welcome all, especially those who are often overlooked. Helping Hand will be phasing into full use of the child-care area over the next several months and the Vestry looks forward to sharing more information about this exciting new chapter at St. James. We give thanks to our Facility Manager, Teri Smith, who has been instrumental in this transition!

Get texts from St. James! We're trying a new communication tool called Remind. Receive brief texts for important events and updates from St. James. Simply use your cell phone to text the code "@f368b89" to the number 81010. Text reminders will go out for things like event deadlines or reminders (crawfish boil reservations, Christmas flower dedications, etc.) or worship changes (inclement weather, etc). You should receive no more than 1 text a week.

Please keep the Rev. Carol Jablonski in your prayers. Carol+ was our interim rector just a few years ago and helped lead us in the early days of the pandemic. She is receiving palliative and end-of-life care in Asheville for a brain tumor.

The Wednesday Healing Eucharist and Monday Morning Prayer will continue during the Nave project in the Parish Hall at regularly scheduled times.

Short Stories for the Soul is this Tuesday, June 13 at noon. Bring your lunch and join us for a soul-stretching conversation about the short story, “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker. Readings can be found on the Adult Formation page on our website. SSS meets the Second Tuesday of every month in the St. James Room.

Philip Wiehe will be directing a 30 minute sermon drama in August. He needs a cast of 4-6 players who will be expected to learn their lines. Any age from 16 years and up may audition. At least two players need to be agile. Experience helpful, but not necessary. Auditions June 14 - 15, 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Email Philip at pfwiehe@gmail.com if you are interested, have a question, or need to set a different time to audition.

JOIN THE SUMMER CHOIR AT ST. JAMES

Summer is here and the St. James Choir sings for Sunday morning services through July 23. If you are musically inclined and enjoy singing, please consider joining us for a "no-commitment" opportunity to join this vital ministry. Summer choir begins SUNDAY, JUNE 25 and goes through SUNDAY, July 23. Meet at 9:15 a.m. in the choir room for a thirty minute rehearsal of the service music and anthems, then sing the 10 a.m. service with us. We will provide music and vestments! For additional information, contact Director of Music Brad Gee at 694-6925 or email Brad@StJamesEpiscopal.com.

Gluten free wafers are available during communion for those with celiac disease or medical issues. You may request this gluten free option at communion from the priest.

Ministry & Fellowship

St. James will be present at the Hendersonville Pride Picnic on Saturday, June 10, from noon to 5 p.m. at Jackson Park along with several other welcoming religious communities including our fellow Episcopalians at Calvary Fletcher. Contact Mindy for more details or to sign up for a shift at the St. James booth.

Justice & Mercy

This month, St. James is having an IAM Food & Clothing Drive! Grab a purple “St. James Recycles” bag in the narthex and fill it with these most needed items: canned meat, fruit, vegetables, and soup; dry goods such as pasta and cereals; personal care items such as diapers (sizes 3,4, 5, 6 – no pull-ups), deodorant, shampoo, bar soap, and razors. Current clothing/linen needs (new and gently used) include men’s and women’s jeans, children’s shoes, towels, pillows, and queen and king sized bedding.

Items can be dropped off in the St. James reception area or in the narthex. Thank you for supporting this mission!
