MAYOR'S UPDATE

From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin

Only two weeks are left to purchase a military banner to recognize veterans and active-duty service members.

How It Works:

Community members, businesses, or organizations can sponsor a banner to honor a service member in their life. The banner is customized with a military service member's name, photo, and service branch and will be displayed along Croton Avenue. The Village of Ossining is proudly working with Military Tribute Banners to create and print these custom banners. All banners will be displayed from Memorial Day through Veterans Day 2024. Banners will be given to the family/sponsor after the display period.

Sponsor A Banner:

Honor a hero in your life by customizing a tribute banner with the photo and name of your hero. Orders are placed directly through Military Tribute Banners, who will work with you to customize your banner to the highest quality. Please note that payment must be received before the design can begin.

The sponsorship rate is $250/sponsored banner. For additional details, please contact Village Historian Joyce Sharrock Cole at historian@villageofossining.org.

We are excited to report that much progress is being made to build all affordable housing, a parking garage, and environmental improvements on Water Street. The next step is a complete environmental cleanup.

Brownfield Site at 30 Water Street (Old DPW Site) - Ossining, Westchester County. Please see the map for the site location. The cleanup activities will be performed by WB 30 Water Street, LLC ("applicant"), with oversight provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). NYSDEC has determined that the Remedial Action Work Plan (RAWP) protects public health and the environment and has approved the plan. Access the approved RAWP and other project documents online and at the locations identified under "Where to Find Information." Remedial activities are expected to begin in March 2025 and last about 10 months.

The Green Ossining Repair Cafe currently expects to have coaches on hand to provide free assistance with repairing/advising on several items listed below.

  • Wood repair, including chairs and small tables
  • Electronics repair (not including AV equipment and printers)
  • Ceramic repair
  • Watch battery replaced (*at cost)

In March of 2021, the Village Board unanimously voted that the 2nd Saturday of March would be the COVID-19 Remembrance Day in the Village of Ossining. This gesture is important to memorialize history as it happens not retroactively. This weekend marks that important date, and I am optimistic that the world is in a better place than where we were in 2020. Our community came together to ensure our neighbors didn’t go hungry and received appropriate healthcare while we did as much as we could to support local merchants.

We completed the work on this memorial in the heart of Nelson sitting park in the Spring of 2022. Each time I visit the memorial, it warms my heart that so many people use this space to reflect on the past three years – and that it brings a sense of optimism and inspiration for a happy and healthier future.

This past weekend, we sprang forward and changed our clocks. This is a good time to also change the batteries in your Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all who celebrate. St. Patrick's Day is a celebration held every year on March 17. Originally a religious feast day (the "Feast of Saint Patrick," the foremost patron saint of Ireland), it has developed into a celebration of Irish heritage and culture generally. The Irish diaspora in many countries around the world celebrates with festivals, parades, and dancing.
