From Jerima DeWese, Chief Diversity Officer & Dean of Diversity:

Queens College will host its inaugural Diversity Week from Monday, April 17 through Friday, April 21, 2023. The goal of Diversity Week is to highlight and appreciate the diverse backgrounds and cultures of QC community members as well as to explore what tools are necessary to address systemic injustice, inequity, and harm. Diversity Week is sponsored by the CUNY Chancellor’s Campus Climate Initiative and the Petrie Foundation.

Monday, April 17 through Thursday, April 20 are Days of Dialogue and Action during which we will present facilitated programs, activities, and events that will cover topics including hate and bias, community policing, culturalism, accessibility and disability awareness, LGBTQIA+ resilience, the existence and impact of discrimination and marginalization, and social justice and equity.

Wednesday, April 19 is a special Passport to Diversity event. Take a trip around the world while staying on campus. This event will allow the Queens College community to explore cultures, religious affiliations, gender identities/sexual orientation, traditions, music, and food from a variety of represented countries/groups of people. Each country/group of people will be showcased by a flag, cultural attire, or garment.

The culminating event of Diversity Week is the full-day Dismantling and Combating Hate Conference on Friday, April 21. Conference participants will examine and discuss the current rising trend of hate incidents, speech, protests, symbols, and crimes that have occurred on college campuses throughout the country and in society at large. During the morning session, a diverse panel of civil rights leaders, local leaders, and members of law enforcement who are working diligently on issues of racism, antisemitism, and bigotry will examine the presence of hate and bias in our community. The panelists will discuss what hate looks like, why now is different from other times in history, and what we can do individually and collectively in response to it. The afternoon program will include a networking lunch and breakout sessions during which participants will brainstorm and create various components of a Bias Response Plan. Register for the Dismantling and Combating Hate Conference here.

Are you interested in facilitating a Diversity Week Days of Dialogue and Action event, participating in the Passport to Diversity event, or hosting a Dismantling and Combating Hate Conference afternoon breakout session? You don’t have to create anything new. Your proposed program could be something that you already have on your calendar as a planned event which also aligns with Diversity Week. This would be a wonderful way to get more marketing, attendance, and participation from the campus community at your event. If you are interested, please complete and submit the Diversity Week Programming Proposal form.

We welcome any proposals that share your research and/or are artistic/creative expressions such as dance, song, art, poetry, cyphers, roundtables, and workshops that educate, engage, and empower the community to understand Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Queens College.

The deadline to submit Diversity Week proposals is close of business on Monday, March 27. Please email all questions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Specialist Estefanie Lliguichuzca at elliguichuzca@qc.cuny.edu.

Additional information about Diversity Week events will be shared via campus email. Please join us! Spread the word to colleagues and community members. We look forward to seeing you!
