Joanne's Meeting and Event EGuide
October 20, 2019
I’ve learned my business is supposed to be “nimble and agile” and that includes the EGuide (being on brand etc.). I guess it reflects the editor. Interpret either way you choose.

Just in case you missed the last edition, here is a link to it for you

Got a question? Want me to find something for you? Did you get this forwarded to you? If you would like to be on the list, text MEETGUIDE to 22828. Or just sign up here online !

Halloween anyone????
It's okay to be awed and creeped out at the same time .

The world loses $400 billion of food before it reaches stores Bloomberg
Not only is it a sin with all the people in the world who go hungry, but did you know food waste is a producer of greenhouse gas emissions? I did not.
The world loses about $400 billion of food before it even gets delivered to stores, according to the United Nations.

Saudi Arabia to Allow Unmarried Foreigners to Share Hotel Rooms Bloomberg
I will admit I did not know these laws existed, and when we discussed it in the graduate class I am teaching, I found out Saudi Arabia is not the only one. Or sometimes it specific hotels or geographical areas within a country. Do most meeting and event planners know this? It could definitely be an issue if people were allowed to bring a “Plus One”. And yes in some areas you are required to have proof.

Opinion: The end of ‘resort fees’ could be at hand MarketWatch
This is going to be interesting…the question is when they get rid of resort fees, will that include facility fees, destination fees and all the others that have popped up---at non-resorts?
Congress takes aim at the controversial fees, which still take some travelers by surprise

The Golden Age of airplane food is over. The future: Snacks and sustainability. The Washington Post
Fascinating article on the history of food on commercial flights. Depending on your age certain parts will remind you ---or amaze you. Seat carved meat anyone? Choice of cigarettes? Did you know that your senses including taste, changes in flight?
It started as boxed lunches. It ascended to lavish meals (perhaps French wine paired with a veal entree), even in economy. Now, we're back to where we started.

Here’s All the Information Cabin Crew Can See About You on Their iPads When You Fl y Travel + Leisure
I had no idea…

How new human-trafficking laws will affect central Florida hotels, hospitality staff USA TODAY
In case you think this is “somewhere else”, I suggest watching some of the videos that are linked in the article. I read last year that the state and local police in one of the midwestern states, have a human trafficking plan for the state fair, because it happens so much. Any event, anytime, anywhere.
A new law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2021, that will require hospitality workers be trained to spot and report human trafficking.

Been there. Probably done every one of these. Except the hostel.
Here's why you may regret booking that early flight, middle seat and tiny rental car or taking the subway from the airport instead of a cab or Uber.

That way you can break the expenses in to two budget years….

ALL THINGS CMP

My Two-Day Intensive Class

“Pay Once, Take Twice Option” Easily
Before the January Exam

This is something I do for all of my classes—pay for one, take a second at no additional cost if you choose. Sometimes people have a hard time doing it conveniently, due to dates or locations being too spread out.

Coming up I have a class in New Jersey and then 6 weeks later, a class in NYC. This means for those that NYC/NJ is convenient, you could pay and come to the New Jersey class, go through the material once, and create a study plan with me. Then you can come to the NYC class, for free, and fill in any holes you might have found.

This puts you in a very good position for the January exam---and I know for a lot of you November – January is a slower time. And yes it is possible, when you know how to strategically prepare, to do the exam that soon. Great way to start 2020!

All Classes are Saturday and Sunday.

In 2020 the registration fee will be increasing from $550 to $600. Some classes have discounts, depending on who is sponsoring .

Marketing Professionals Are Highly Gullible, According to New Statistics Inc.

This is NOT just about Marketing Professionals, and some would say a lot of people in Hospitality, Meetings and Events, fall under marketing. Would I say there is never a time to take a title change without other benefits? No—but I would say don’t let your ego get in your way.

Hustling for my career took over my personal life — this is how it hurt me, and how I fought my way back Business Insider

Yes this article features women…but it does not mean it’s not true for everyone. And the next article on Gen Z—maybe they have the right idea.
Continual drive can take a physical toll. Working towards creating something, or doing something big, often necessitates putting other aspects of your life on the back burner. These six women found success through continual hustling. But they also found some adverse side effects.

Gen Z women are less likely than millennial women to want to be reachable at all times, and it might be a sign of 'tech fatigue'
Business Insider

Yes, the research in this article is focused on Millennial and Gen Z women, so you may not think it applies to you. But if your co-workers, or the people you supervise, or the people you live with are in those age ranges---take a look. The article also ties in well with the one above.
Only one-third of women in Gen Z report feeling optimistic about the effects of technology on society. A new study from GfK Consumer Life asked over 37,000 people in 31 different markets and 25 countries about their feelings on technology.
