"If I could do it all over again, I would have started with Joanne first! Joanne was wonderful in assisting in my studies and quest for my CMP. Without her tips and advice, I would have not had the confidence to pass the exam. I only had the pleasure of meeting Joanne at the CMP Masterclass that she taught at iMEX America this past October, but every moment was exceptional. Thank you Joanne!!!"

My adventures at IACC -Americas (International Association of Conference Centers)

Last week I had the opportunity to be involved as a presenter and panel moderator at IACC – Americas at the new UCLA Luskin Conference Center.

I am a huge passionate fan of IACC conference centers, and the more I learn about them, the more passionate I become. What I love is they are not just somewhere that decided to put Conference Center on their sign. They have very strong and varied quality requirements that they must adhere to, to have the IACC status. If you are not familiar with these take a look at their Quality Standards.

Have a heavy duty learning event coming up? Look for an IACC Venue around the world http://www.iacconline.org/venues/

Also while I was there MPI and IACC announced an education and research global partnership.

Things that interest me…. and maybe you!

A New Food Trend
Spaghetti doughnuts are now a thing

Two of my favorite things – how can they be bad ? It will be interesting to see how long it takes for them to start showing up at venues.

What Happens to Old Hotel Bar Soap?
Meet Orlando Charity Clean the World

I always thought what a waste it was that hotel amenities were trashed after frequently one use. As these non-profits formed that give a second life to the soap and potentially save many lives with giving people the ability to be cleaner it moves me on many levels. Soap is something most of us take for granted. It is also a great sustainable action. If you are looking at site and your organization has a strong stand on sustainability and/or world health, this is a question to be asking--"what do  you do with your soap?" There is more than one organization doing similar work, and this article gives you a perspective.

Have you ever thought of Meetings and Tourism as an export?
Although this is written from the US point of view by Roger Dow is president and CEO of the US Travel Association, a national, non-profit organization representing all components of the travel industry, much of the same argument could be made for any country. I share this with you not to go into US Politics, but to make us all think of the Meetings Industry in a different perspective.

Here are the remaining 2017 Exam Dates:

May 5-14

August 4-13

November 3-12

Last weekend I had the opportunity to teach a two-day Meetings and Events Intensive class in New York City.

Most people are in some stage of preparing to take their CMP exam, but I have to tell me it makes me so happy when the dots all connect and people realize how it pertains to their real world work. I always want my material to be able to be used when you go back to the office, and that you know how to do that even if you can’t do it all at once. MPI-Greater New York (City) Chapter came in as a Marketing Sponsor and it was a huge success and we hope to continue to partner for future classes including one in June/July.

Our hotel sponsor was the Downtown Marriott NYC  and that was a wonderful experience. Not only did they host the class, I also stayed there three nights in very nice sized rooms especially for a city hotel. Walk out the door for some of the best shopping and eating, the World Trade Center and the Memorial for 9/11. This was my first time being there since the rebuilding and building.

The Marriott is ideal for meetings up to about 300 for general sessions and second room for meals. Our meeting room was a whole wall of windows which was nice since sun and spring seem to finally be creeping up the east coast of the US. My thanks to both MPI-GNY and the Downtown Marriott for their partnership!

From my April 2017 NYC class:

I feel this was extremely valuable for not only preparing for and passing the exam, but also at my current job and for my professional growth. I really feel you explained everything clearly, and since you were so passionate about the material, I felt great about being 'stuck' inside a 'classroom' for two beautiful weekend days. I very much appreciate your time, knowledge, and dedication.

CMP Preparation

Many of you have met me through your CMP process and I am grateful. I appreciate your support in passing the word on as you have met others who are working towards theirs.
The classes are a variety of half-day, one, two and three day classes for the most part. Many of them are taught through my company directly but others have support and sponsorship through various organizations. My calendar lists three two-day classes that are already on the calendar and two one-day. All of these are open to anyone.

They do have a variety of price points because of being structured differently. Contact me if you are interested in more information about any of them. There are also some others pending including multi-day ones in Las Vegas, Los Cabos and Atlanta. I am always open to new locations if there is enough interest including internationally and have had the opportunity to do so including this past summer in Bangkok, Thailand.

  And that leads us to
Jobs and Careers .....

I am surprised when I talk to job seekers in our industry and ask them where they are finding jobs to apply for. It used to be I would hear Monster or Career Builder, now more often it is Indeed. When I ask where else I frequently get blank stares as if “Where else would there be?”

First if you are looking for job I would strongly suggest you look for a job specific website---I am guessing there are ones for pretty much every field, even if it is on a larger industry specific site. The first one that I was ever aware of and am a huge fan of both the site and the founder, is MeetingJobs.com. Dawn Penfold is one of the most amazing people and knows the industry, and the people, inside and out.  As with most job search sites, you can set up your profile with criteria so jobs are sent to you or you can go to the site directly and look at everything posted .

These are from MeetingJobs.com:

Team Manager (Pharma Events)  Banks Sadler New York, New York

Meeting Planner  Prudential Newark, NJ

Convention Manager  Ashfield Meetings & Events East Hanover, NJ

From EventCareers.com

Senior Events Manager California Science Center Foundation Los Angeles, CA

Event Planner U.S. Green Building Council Washington D.C.

From Linked In

Global Event Planner WorkinSports.com New Balance Boston, MA

The Assistant Director of Event and Meeting Planning Boston University Boston, MA

From Associations Now (ASAE)

Manager, Meetings American Association of Airport Executives Alexandria, VA

Meeting Planner National Defense Industrial Association Arlington, VA

A New Resource MuseumJobsOnline.com
You would never think of museums needing event planners, but they do...

Director of Operations and Facility Management Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art Virginia Beach, VA

Visitor Experience Coordinator Smithsonian Institution Washington D.C.

Where else can you look?

One of my favorites, maybe because I started in Higher Education (Colleges and Universities) is  HighEdJobs.com

No this is not planning events with the students—that’s Student Activities. This is working with internal meetings and/or external—meetings that use the campus as a venue. A wide variety of types of jobs exist. Working at a college and university has a lot of nice perks so don’t rule it out.

Here are some examples from all over the world and a variety of different levels:

Event Management Assistant  Wake Forest University Winston-Salem, NC

Events Manager Dartmouth College Hanover, NH

Events Manager Rice University Houston, TX

Event Planner Villanova University Villanova, PA

Alumni and Events Coordinator Georgia State University Atlanta, GA

And speaking of which….

T he Guidance Counselor for Grown Ups

Some of you may be aware I have two sections of my company. The other is “The Guidance Counselor for Grown Ups” where I work with individuals and organizations to answer “What’s Next?” Here’s a short video of some of my thoughts that may help you in your career.

If you are on this list you probably heard me present on the meetings and events industry (good chance on the CMP exam) but no, you did not ask to be on this list because the list did not exist till now. If you choose to unsubscribe I totally get it. On the other hand if you stick around there might be something interesting, or amusing or maybe even both.
