EB Public Library Pet Photo Contest

The EB Public Library hosted a pet photo contest for the residents and pets of East Bridgewater! To enter, participants emailed funny, cute, and beautiful photos of their beloved pets to the library by June 23rd. Voting began on July 1st, and the pictures were laminated and hung in the library's ramp entryway.

The winners were announced on July 23rd! Charlie and Linky, two adorable cats, tied with Boomer, a super cute and fluffy pup! The library posted:

"Congratulations to our two winners. It was a tie between Charlie/Linky and Boomer! Hope everyone had fun sharing their furry family members and seeing all of the other cute pets in the area. The pictures will be left up until August 1 to enjoy. Please see the Children's Room if you would like your laminated pet's photo, on or after August 2."

They will have them available until Sept. 5.

What a great way to bring the pet lovers of the community together!

Historical Tidbit: War Ration Book

Back of booklet: "Rationing is a vital part of your country's war effort. Any attempt to violate the rules is an effort to deny someone his share and will create hardship and help the enemy.

This book is your Government's assurance of your right to buy your fair share of certain goods made scarce by war. Price ceilings have also been established for your protection. Dealers must post these prices conspicuously. Don't pay more.

Give your whole support to rationing and thereby conserve our vital goods. Be guided by the rule: If you don't need it, DON'T BUY IT."

Items were rationed during WWII because of shortages in the rubber and metal industries. Because trucks using rubber tires delivered processed goods, anything processed was rationed. As of February 1942, all metal work was converted to producing tanks, aircraft, weapons, and other military products. The United States government was the only customer and so there was no longer available: metal office furniture, typewriters, radios, phonographs, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and sewing machines.

Civilians first received ration books, War Ration Book Number One: 4 May 1942, through more than 100,000 school teachers, PTA groups, and other volunteers. A national speed limit of 35 miles per hour was imposed to save fuel and rubber for tires. Each person in a household received a ration book, including babies and small children who qualified for canned milk not available to others. To receive a gasoline ration, a person had to prove they owned no more than 5 tires, the extras would be confiscated.

April 1, 1942, anyone wishing to purchase a new toothpaste tube, then made from metal, had to turn in an empty one. On May 5, the US was rationed to 1/2 pound of sugar per person per week. Coffee was rationed nationally on November 29, 1942 to one pound every five weeks. By the end of 1942, rationing was in place for typewriters, gasoline, bicycles, footwear, silk, nylon, fuel oil, stoves, meat, lard, shortening and oils, cheese, butter, margarine, processed foods, (canned, bottled, and frozen), dried fruits, canned milk, firewood, coal, jams, jellies, and fruit butter.

BAPC is made up of five local community coalitions including the Brockton Mayor's Opioid Overdose Prevention Coalition, Bridging LIVES, EB Hope, Rockland CARES and Whitman Hanson WILL.

"International Overdose Awareness Day is observed each year on August 31st, providing communities across the globe an opportunity to remember those who have died from overdose and to support their loved ones who continue to carry their memory forward. Locally, BAPC commemorates this day by creating a memorial slideshow honoring individuals from Southeastern Massachusetts who have lost their lives to substance use disorder.

Through the power of personal photographs, the slideshow seeks to humanize the crisis, reduce stigma, and encourage compassion. "

"In addition to the memorial slideshow, the vigil will feature reflections from local speakers sharing

personal and community perspectives on substance use disorder and recovery. The evening is intended to foster connection, promote healing, and remind all those impacted that they are not alone and are deeply valued.

To include a loved one in this year’s slideshow, please email their photograph, along with their full

name, to photo.vigil@gmail.com by Tuesday, August 12th.

We ask that submissions come from

immediate family members. Photos must be clear, high quality, and depict the individual as they were in life — not actively using substances.

Screenshots, images of prayer cards, or low-resolution files cannot be included due to display limitations."

Climate Can-Do:

Farm Fresh Eggs

The eggs that you buy may have an impact on your overall health. Knowing where your eggs come from is important to understanding the nutritional values that you are getting from your eggs and the quality of the eggs you buy. Overall, eggs that come from free-range chickens are preferable.

Free-range: chickens have access to the outdoors and can participate in natural behaviors such as nesting and laying eggs. This is the style most commonly used by smaller local farms.

Cage-free: chickens are not kept in cages, but have little to no access to the outdoors.

Studies have shown the following benefits of free-range eggs over cage-free eggs:

⅓ less cholesterol

¼ less saturated fat

⅔ more Vitamin A

3X more Vitamin E

7X more beta-carotene

2X Omega-3 fatty acids

In addition, free-range eggs are 6X higher in Vitamin D, have significantly more B Vitamins, and contain more antioxidants.

Make sure to shop locally for high-quality, nutritional eggs!

Soul Power & Play

"Our annual Soul Power Play Retreat was a success!

This year we had over 60 registered participants, 12 teen volunteers, 6 break-out group experts, 2 art teachers, 2 keynote speakers, 1 badass fitness trainer, 4 lead counselors, and the best camp nurse around.

The grounds at Stonehill College were stunning and peaceful. We moved our bodies, made healthy DIY snacks, did creative projects, walked in nature, learned to move with confidence and to use our voice effectively, we talked about self-esteem and authenticity, we learned the power of a penny and how to save to reach our goals, we learned about online safety and connected with new and old friends and, we had a BLAST!

We are so grateful to everyone who made this possible. A huge thank you to ConfiKids, Inc. and Patrick J. Folan. Their generous support allowed us to give out 15 need based scholarships each day!

Our hearts are full and we can't wait for next year!!!"

Growth

"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." ~ Viktor E. Frankl

"The biggest lie about getting older is that excitement and growth end with youth. "

~ MO

"In our work and in our living, we must recognize that difference is a reason for celebration and growth, rather than a reason for destruction." ~ Audre Lorde

"Growth is an erratic forward movement: two steps forward, one step back. Remember that and be very gentle with yourself." ~ Julia Cameron

Very gentile, indeed.

Days go by and I wonder: "What did I learn?" "What did I get right?"

Sometimes I never know, life seems like mashed potatoes.

But sometimes I have fun, feel appreciated & loved and things look ok. Those days, I reflect, I think I figured it out.

How did I do that? I wonder... maybe I can replicate it? Then again, I think, mashed potatoes are yummy!

Enjoy your growth : ) ~ Jacquie
