Where to Go for Fun in The Pines

August 9, 2023

Dear Susan,

This past Friday, I had the pleasure of attending the Arts Council of Moore County's Opening Reception for the 2023 Fine Arts Festival, and what a stunning event it was!

The reception, hosted by the ACMC Board of Trustees, took place in the beautiful Campbell House Galleries in Southern Pines. This exhibit truly showcased the immense talent and craftsmanship of our local artists. Attendees had the chance to vote for their favorite artwork for the Lee Barrett People's Choice Award. It was inspiring to witness the artists' passion and dedication to their craft, and I was thrilled to be able to show my support in their work.

Elija McCormick Concert

Coming to

Senior Enrichment Center

Don't miss out on an unforgettable concert hosted by the Moore County Senior Enrichment Center. Performing is the sensational Elijah McCormick, Moore County's very own American Idol star! This will most certainly be a very special event filled with inspiration and exceptional music.

Elijah McCormick made it to the top 26 on American Idol, showcasing his incredible gift of music. He firmly believes that singing is a form of healing and aims to evoke emotions through his performances. Elijah's journey to success has been nothing short of inspiring. Just four years ago, he was involved in a terrible car crash only hours after his high school graduation and just a mile away from his home. Pinned under the steering wheel in a burning vehicle, Elijah fought for his life. Airlifted to Chapel Hill, he flatlined eight times, underwent nine surgeries, required dialysis and spent over two months at UNC hospital. Elijah fought and defied the odds, having to learn to walk and talk once again. He showed great determination and held tight to a positive attitude. His first words when he was able to speak again were, "Mama, can I still sing?"

Now, Elijah is celebrating his second chance at life by sharing his undeniable musical gift with the world. He firmly believes that God has a plan for him and continues to accomplish incredible feats each day. Recently, he released his debut single, "Soar," which can now be streamed on all platforms!

The concert takes place this Friday, August 11th | 2pm-3pm. To attend you must be 50 years old or above. The event is completely free, and refreshments will also be provided. Boles Funeral Home & Crematory and Garner Law Firm, PLLC have generously sponsored this event. By joining on this memorable occasion, you will witness Elijah's impressive performance and hear firsthand about his journey.

Let Elijah McCormick bring a smile to your face and inspire you with his remarkable talent. Mark your calendars for this can't-miss concert. To reserve your space, please call the Moore County Senior Enrichment Center at 910-947-4483

Sunrise Live

Proudly Presents

"The 25th Annual

Putnam County Spelling Bee!"

The Sunrise Theater's

First-Ever

Live Theatre Musical

The production will showcase the outstanding talents of our local community actors, alongside a sensational live band. The heartfelt and award-winning musical follows a group of spirited sixth-graders as they compete in a gripping spelling competition. Audiences all over the country have loved its wit and humor. Watch as the tweens compete for the spelling championship of their lives, sharing funny and touching stories along the way. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the contestants spell their way through a series of potentially fictitious words.

The story is brought to life through full band musical numbers, led by Dr. Larry Arnold who recently retired from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke as Professor of Music where he taught audio production, instrumental and vocal jazz, rock history, piano and bass. He has often been an instrumentalist and musical director in regional musical theatre with the Temple Theatre, Sandhills Repertory Theatre and Cape Fear Regional Theatre. With a fast-paced and entertaining script by Rachel Sheinkin and a fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is an unforgettable experience. Six spellers enter, but only one speller will leave a champion! Can they avoid the dreaded bell that signals a spelling mistake?

So, don't miss out on this upcoming crowd pleaser. Be sure to save your date and secure your tickets now as it will most certainly be a blast of a show! Showtimes take place Friday-Sunday, August 11th-August 20th. This production is sponsored by First Bank and Swank Coffee Shoppe & Handmade Market.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at https://www.sunrisetheater.com/.

I do hope you enjoy this week with many of the exciting activities available to you! And, remember, The Pines Times is updated on a daily basis ... so be sure to visit www.ThePinesTimes.com often!
