Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA)'s request for solutions that support their desire for an integrated capability to detect and analyze Foreign Malign Influence (FMI) using Publicly Available Information (PAI). The solution must include data provisioning, narrative tracking, and interactive tools focused on publicly available information (PAI) while ensuring privacy compliance.

In other data news, on October 9th, DefenseScoop published an article entitled U.S. military deploys Maven Smart System for Hurricane Helene disaster response. In this story, Mark Pomerleau describes the U.S. military's deployment of the Maven Smart System, an AI-powered geospatial data tool, to support relief efforts for Hurricane Helene. By aggregating sensor data in real time, Maven helps responders optimize logistics and resource distribution, enhancing situational awareness and coordination with FEMA and other agencies.

  • 'We’re looking at different unique capabilities that we will only have in a military use case that are not necessarily specific to us, but that can get data out of some of these environments that have little to no communications capabilities back into the FEMA dashboard so they understand where to redistribute supplies and things,' the second defense official told reporters. 'I think being able to bring together this unified single pane of glass common operating picture with the team here is really given us a better situational awareness and being able to respond faster to hopefully facilitate FEMA getting support and supplies out quicker.'”

Is ‘Big AI’ beating 'small AI'—and what does it mean for the military?

The prevailing "bigger-is-better" approach to artificial intelligence—ingest more training data, produce larger models, build bigger data centers—might be undermining the kind of research and development the U.S. military actually needs now and in the future. That’s the argument in "Hype, Sustainability, and the Price of the Bigger-is-Better Paradigm in AI," a new paper that scrutinizes common assumptions driving AI research.

Artificial Intelligence May Augment Diplomatic Data Security

For the State Department, AI offers a lot of promise in trend analysis of threat intelligence.
