It's Not About The Religion,

It's About The Relationship!

See you this Sunday!

THE MID-WEEK BUZZ

Pure as a Child

What great worship we had this week. Thank you for entering into this series and the great conversations we have been having after the service. These first few weeks of summer have been a joy.

This week we will explore two new beatitudes, “blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” and “blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” We will talk about how this second beatitude of being pure in heart has a connection to Jesus’ teaching of entering the kindom of God like a child in Matthew 18.

This week our friends at ICF (India Christian Fellowship) are hosting their annual Vacation Bible School (VBS) at the church. The space we share will be full shouting, dancing, laughing children learning about he love of God and worshipping God with their pure hearts. I want us to pray this week for these kids that they would grow in knowledge and love for God. Jesus says they are blessed so we should bless them, as well, and through our prayers we may be sowing spiritual seed for our own faith and our church.

Perhaps, also try to spend time with some of the children that come to our church this Sunday. Make sure to give them a special welcome and let them know we love them and that God is on their side.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Brandon

June Basket of Hope

Greetings from the Outreach Ministry!!!

First, thank you for helping stock the Abraxas High School food pantry this May! For the month of June, we would like to fill our Basket of Hope with all the ingredients to make 100 sack lunches for Interfaith Community Services in Escondido. It has been our mission here at the Community Church of Poway to help them with their mission to feed the homeless and to make life easier for those on the streets. Together, we can make a difference in another’s life. Here is a list of the items we are requesting:

  • Peanut butter (small jars preferred)
  • Jelly (small jars preferred)
  • Chips (single serve)
  • Soft granola bars or fig bars
  • Fruit snacks
  • Bottled water (single serve)
  • Napkins
  • Plastic sandwich bags

Day of packing (July 5th)

  • Fresh Clementine tangerines or apples
  • Fresh bread

On July 5, we will have a “Do Church” to put the sack lunches together for our neighbors in need. During church, we will make 100 peanut and jelly sandwiches and after church we will pack 100 sack lunches with all the goodies.

We are looking forward to this mission of service. It’s a lot of fun and it does so much good😊Thank you as always for supporting your Outreach Ministry.

Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz

It's been a busy, stressful week taking care of a sick, elderly cat. I want to give the topic of pre-colonial gender expression and sexual orientation (plus the impact of colonization) the time it deserves.

In the meantime, I'd like to highlight Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz, the theologian who popularized the term kindom as an alternative to kingdom (and who learned the term from her friend, Georgene Wilson, a Franciscan nun).

"This language of the kin-dom of God is another important contribution to theological inquiry. Noting that kingdoms are heavily rooted in hierarchy and patriarchy in ways that foster inequality and subservience rather than communal flourishing, Isasi-Díaz claims the metaphor has lost its meaning. She proposes a better alternative: a word that speaks of relationship—kin-dom. When we recognize the ways the language of the kingdom has been coopted by those seeking to impose authoritarian and violent structures of government for the sake of 'Christian values,' claiming a new metaphor seems particularly necessary.

Today, Isasi-Díaz reminds me that a relationship with the divine 'finds expression in walking picket lines more than in kneeling, in being in solidarity with the poor and the oppressed more than in fasting and mortifying the flesh, in striving to be passionately involved with others more than in being detached, in attempting to be faithful to who I am and what I believe God wants of me more than in following prescriptions for holiness that require me to negate myself.' In this, I find hope." -Kathleen Bonnette

Ada lived an interesting life, coming to the US as a political refugee, contributing to the feminist theological movement, and even drawing ire for preaching at her gay nephew's wedding.

Thanks for reading, y'all. If you need to contact me, feel free to reach out at the email address listed below.

Until next time,
