Albumen photo circa 1880's of Queen Victoria with Princess Beatrice and a Group of 4 Dogs

Queen Victoria [1819-1901]

Very interesting and rare circa 1880’s albumen photo of Queen Victoria with Princess Beatrice and Queen Victoria's her 4 dogs plus a circa 1876 Queen Victoria hand-written note photographed: Victoria, Beatrice - "Waldmann" "Fern", "Sharp" and "Noble" . Princess Beatrice, was Queen Victoria youngest child and wife of Prince Henry of Battenberg (1857-1944). Original albumen photo of a presumed circa 1877 Charles Burton Barber painting, with some foxing and a bit faded otherwise good condition.

This photo is unusual in part because it appears to be a very similar image of Charles Burton Barber* oil on canvas painting "Queen Victoria with Princess Beatrice and a Group of Dogs (before Apr 1877)" which shows Queen Victoria seated near the Slopes at Windsor painted for the Queen from photographs. Princess Beatrice stands beside her and they are surrounded by four dogs: Waldmann, Fern, Sharp and Noble. Barber was paid £24 for the picture on 2 April 1877. It was originally hung at Osborne House, it was transferred in 1903 to Buckingham Palace. The painting is held at the Royal Collection Trust (RCIN 406403). Our albumen photograph is virtually the same image as the Barber painting except for the angle on the head of Princess Beatrice.

An Act for authorizing a guarantee of a loan … for … the transfer of Rupert's Land [11th August 1869]

British Government - Act of Parliament

First edition. 1869. Quite scarce. 10-1/2 x 6-1/2 inches. 3 pages [32 & 33 Vict.] Ch. 101. Known as "The Canada Rupert's Land Loan Act" It accompanies Bill 240 which was published in 1868. Near fine condition. Peel 503, p.57

In 1863, a group calling itself the International Financial Society orchestrated a takeover of HBC. The new owners of the Company quickly increased HBC’s market capitalization by promoting settlement, minerals, and a transcontinental telegraph — all based on selling or leveraging the Company’s vast land holdings. However, the Governor and Committee soon realized that any attempt at promoting settlement would have to wait until there was a functioning government in place. The Company embarked on negotiations to sell its territories, first to Britain, who didn’t want them, and then to the Province of Canada, who had no means to purchase them and, in any case, did not recognize HBC’s claim to the land. With the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867, the transfer of Rupert’s Land could finally move forward. The new federal government had an authority the Province of Canada did not.
